Baseball: Guyer beats Azle for second seed

JUSTIN — A two-out, bases-clearing double from Chris Monroe in the bottom of the sixth inning of a tied game gave Guyer a comfortable lead in a come-from-behind 9-5 win over Azle in a game to determine seeding in the state playoffs, which begin this week.

The regular season ended for District 5-4A on Friday night, but three teams — Guyer, Azle and Trophy Club Nelson — were forced to play a mini tournament at Justin Northwest to determine the second, third and fourth seeds behind district champion Wichita Falls Rider.

Guyer will be the second seed from 5-4A and will open the playoffs against Saginaw, the third seed out of District 6-4A, while Azle will be seeded third and meet Saginaw Boswell or Birdville in the first round.

Guyer will travel to Saginaw for Game 1 of the series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Game 2 set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Guyer and Game 3, if necessary, to follow at 7 p.m.

“It’s the start of the third season, so it’s good to know who you’re going to play and get that game set,” Guyer coach Johnny Kinzy said. “It’s that time of the year to get after it.”

Guyer won two games in as many days, run-ruling Fort Worth Brewer 10-0 on Friday in the regular-season finale and getting the comeback win over Azle on Saturday. The two-game winning streak follows a two-game skid that saw Guyer fall out of first place after losing to Rider and Wichita Falls.

“These last two games we played really well,” Kinzy said. “We’ve played about as good of baseball as we have all year long. The kids showed a lot of fight scoring eight runs in the last couple of innings to win.”

Earlier in the day, Azle defeated Nelson 8-4 to advance to the game against Guyer for the second seed. Nelson will represent 5-4A as the fourth seed.
