Lone goal comes on free kick in game delayed by weather
FORT WORTH — Audrey Reynolds scored off her own free kick with just under 15 minutes left in the opening half to push Fort Worth Arlington Heights past defending state champion Guyer 1-0 in a Class 4A Region I quarterfinal at Farrington Field.
Guyer (17-3-3) came in having outscored its first three playoff opponents 11-0 but was shutout for the first time this season despite outshooting the Lady Yellowjackets 5-1 in the second half.
Heights (17-2) moves on to the Region I tournament this weekend in Wichita Falls.
With 14:58 left in the first half, Guyer’s Hannah Alspach — an Auburn signee — was called for a foul when she ran into Heights’ Amanda Long at the 35-yard line. Long was shaken up on the play, and as she reached the sideline, Reynolds booted a high free kick that floated just under the crossbar and over the arms of Guyer goalie Mikayla Renfroe.
The Lady Wildcats had several quality chances to tie the game in the second half, including one shot off a scrum in front of the goal that was cleared off the line at the last second. With 43 seconds left, Brittany Crabtree tried to take control of the ball deep in Heights territory but couldn’t get a shot off.
The game — originally slated for an 8 p.m. start — was delayed until 9:02 p.m. due to weather.
