Guyer clinched a playoff spot before Friday’s District 5-4A game with Trophy Club Nelson, but still needed another win to potentially snap a three-team tie for second with Nelson and Fort Worth Brewer.

It took some late-inning offense and strong pitching from Shayne Starkey, but the Lady Wildcats — ranked No. 25 in Class 4A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association — at least did their part with a 3-0 win over Nelson at Wildcat Field. Brewer, No. 20 in the same TGCA poll, beat No. 8 Azle in 13 innings, which leaves Guyer and Brewer in a tie for second place.

“We’re just trying to get the highest seed possible now,” Guyer coach Keith Medford said. “I felt like the kids were loose; they weren’t playing all tight like it was Game 7 of the World Series, but it definitely was a playoff atmosphere out there tonight.”

Guyer (22-4, 9-3 district) will finish out the season at Lake Dallas and home against Wichita Falls Rider.

Leading 1-0, the Lady Wildcats plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to give Starkey all the cushion she needed to fend off a late rally from Nelson. The Lady Bobcats (13-12, 8-4) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh off back-to-back singles and a Guyer error — all with two outs.

Starkey pitched her way out of the jam, one of three on the night as Nelson stranded nine runners. The first jam came in the top of the second, when Nelson got back-to-back singles and with a passed ball quickly had runners on second and third with no outs.

Starkey got the next three batters out on two pop-ups and a groundout. Facing runners on first and third with two outs in the sixth, she struck out Nelson’s Jacey Allen.

“That kid, she’s as competitive as they come,” Medford said of Starkey.

Guyer scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth, when Sophia Popowski singled home Alyssa Dixon. Dixon, who finished 2-for-2 with a double and was also hit by a pitch, looked like she would be thrown out at home, but catcher Chelsie McClure missed the tag.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second with one out, Stephanie Otto hit a line drive just over the shortstop’s glove to give Guyer a 2-0 lead. Lauren Lindgren followed with an RBI single to round out the scoring.

“We knew this was an important game and that Nelson would be tough,” Medford said. “The game could have gone either way; this is what district games should be like. It was tight, but we were fortunate.”
