Football: No. 1 Allen scores 45 unanswered to roll past Guyer

For at least the first five minutes of Friday night's game against No. 1 Allen, Guyer seemed to have the upper hand on the Eagles.

The Wildcats' defense forced a punt on the opening drive of the game before quarterback Luke Stillwell led the offense on a dominant 6-play, 76-yard scoring drive.

But after the fast start, it didn't take long for quarterback Grant Tisdale to regain control of the game. Allen (7-0, 4-0 District 6-6A) scored 45 unanswered to remain unbeaten in the season with a 45-7 win.

"It's just devastating," Stillwell said. "It's one of those games you love playing in, and we had them circled on our calendar for a whole year. We were all ready for it and watching it fall away is tough."

Guyer (4-3, 2-2 District 6-6A) hung around in the first half until Allen's Marcus Thomas forced a fumble on a third-down reverse. Jayden Jernigan recovered the ball and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown, extending the Eagles' lead to 21-7.

The Wildcats drove down the field on the ensuing offensive possession, chewing up more than seven minutes off the clock to set up a red-zone opportunity just before the end of the half.

But after getting to the 12-yard line and facing a third-down and one, a fumbled snap pushed Guyer into a fourth-down and long situation.

Rather than kicking a field goal before the half, Walsh elected to keep his offense on the field in hopes of building some momentum with Guyer set to get the ball to open the third quarter. Stillwell rolled out to his right but was brought down well short of the first-down marker as the Wildcats were unable to finish the 14-play drive.

"Those missed opportunities to keep it close were huge," Walsh said. "I'm not saying missed opportunities to win the game, but missed opportunities to keep it close. The whole game plan was to keep this thing close going into the fourth quarter. When they scoop and score and we don't get a third-down and one, you're asking for a 45-7 ballgame."

Outside of the long drive in the second quarter, Guyer's offense looked its best right out of the gate. With Allen zeroing in on Kaedric Cobbs in the backfield, Stillwell had two carries for 55 yards before sophomore Trace Jewell added a 14-yard carry to move the Wildcats inside the Eagles' 5-yard line.

Stillwell then found sophomore Harrison Bohannon on a 3-yard pass to give Guyer its only lead of the night.

Allen bounced back quickly with several big plays, scoring first on a 40-yard pass from Tisdale to Theo Wease. Brock Sturges broke off a 50-yard touchdown run before Jernigan's fumble return for a touchdown, and Tisdale capped off the first-half scoring with a 53-yard run of his own.

Walsh said preventing the big home run plays was key heading into the game, and Allen's first five touchdowns came from 40 or more yards out.

"It had a huge impact," Walsh said. "I'm tired of saying what needs to be done in the game plan with the guys in jerseys and helmets not executing that game plan."

The Wildcats will travel to Wylie next week, looking to bounce back in district play. The Pirates are 3-4 on the season, but improved to 2-2 in District 6-6A with an impressive 34-3 win against Plano Friday night.

"I gave them a pretty good chewing there at the end," Walsh said. "But I told them this game meant nothing before and it means nothing after. They better embrace what happened tonight and the message I gave them after."
