KRUM — Darrin Pennington started rolling over the Krum defense from the first snap.

After taking a handoff on the first play from scrimmage 62 yards to paydirt, Farmersville’s running back went on to rush for 139 yards in a 35-27 win Friday night against Krum at Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats (1-1) struggled to stop the run early, ultimately allowing 285 rushing yards on 48 carries to the Farmers (1-1). Krum totaled just 249 yards.

Following Pennington’s score, Farmersville running back Andrew Simons found the end zone nine minutes later on a 10-yard run out of the wishbone to extend the lead to 14-0.

Things continued to spiral out of control for Krum with a three-and-out on the next drive, and Jaelon Clark returned the punt 48 yards to the house for a 21-0 Farmers lead with 42 seconds left in the first quarter.

Both teams traded punts heading into the second quarter, before sophomore quarterback Colten Graham got the Bobcats on the board with a 9-yard option keeper. The point-after attempt hit off the upright to leave the Bobcats with a 21-6 disadvantage with six minutes left in the opening half.

Simons, who finished with 15 carries for 89 yards and two touchdowns, answered for Farmersville with a 5-yard run up the gut to push the lead to 28-6 with 33 seconds remaining until halftime.

On the ensuing series, Graham flung a screen pass to wideout Brennan Ellis, who took it 50 yards for a touchdown that brought the Bobcats within 28-13 heading into the break.

After going for 245 combined offensive yards in 28-25 win against Caddo Mills in the season opener, Ellis finished with 15 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown to go along with two catches for 56 yards and a score.

Krum opened the second half with a 12-play, 73-yard scoring drive, capped by Ellis’ 2-yard scoring run to cut the Farmers’ lead to 28-20 with 6:06 left in the third quarter.

Farmersville answered on the first play of the final stanza as quarterback Cole Anderson scored on a 1-yard sneak to pull ahead 35-20.

With a little momentum and little time to cash in on it, Graham, who finished 6-of-19 passing for 97 yards and one score to go with 10 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns, scrambled for a 4-yard score to cut the deficit to 35-27 with 3:06 remaining.

Pennington busted out a 20-yard run on third-and-seven, and Anderson ran out the clock.

Krum will play again at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Alvord.
