Football: Four-TD back burns Bobcats

ALVORD — A trip to Alvord was not kind to the Krum Bobcats, nor was Joe Randall. Alvord topped Krum 28-21 as Randall scored four touchdowns in three different ways.

The Alvord junior running back put three scores on the board in the first half with a 20-yard run, a returned punt and a returned interception, and finished with a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Krum (1-2) rallied back in the fourth quarter but, with 38 seconds on the clock, could not drive the length of the field for a potential game-tying touchdown.

“We just didn’t show up ready to play,” head coach Gary Robinson said. “These guys can play better than this, we saw it last year.”

Krum was considered the favorite headed into the matchup against Alvord (2-1). The Bobcats were coming off of a 35-27 loss to Farmersville the week before.

“Eventually, we’re going to come together and start winning football games,” Robinson said. “We’ve got a very young team. We have a bunch of sophomores playing; we have a sophomore quarterback and, at times, a sophomore running back.”

Quarterback Colten Graham went 9-for-22 passing for 142 yards, but showed his youth with the two interceptions. Brennan Ellis rushed for 192 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and added a team-high four catches for 64 yards.

With Krum down 14-7 late in the first half, Alvord marched down the field to the Bobcats’ 5-yard line. Tyrone Emery saved points by intercepting an errant pass by Casey Patterson, but the momentum gained was lost on the next play when Randall intercepted Graham’s pass and took it to the end zone to make the score 21-7.

In addition to the four touchdowns, Randall ran for 159 yards and intercepted a second pass in the third quarter.

“Joe can score from any place on the field, just like he scores from any position on the field,” Alvord head coach Curtis Enis said. “He’s just a football player.”

Despite allowing big gains, the Alvord defense stood tough when Krum started to reach scoring position.

“We bent, but we didn’t break,” Enis said. “We were lucky to get a couple of interceptions and a fumble.”

Krum next plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Paradise.
