Football: Miscues prevent Ponder rally

FORT WORTH — Ponder tried to make a comeback against Fort Worth Castleberry, but in the end, mistakes and penalties by the Lions led to a 28-19 loss on Friday night.

The game was dominated by Castleberry’s rushing attack with 232 yards on 32 attempts. Ponder gave up two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter by running backs Alex Scallion and Christian Cardona, who scored on a 63-yard run.

Ponder was only down by two touchdowns, but penalties and mental mistakes cost the team any chances they had to capitalize on great field position.

“We are young in places and we hadn’t had a lot of varsity experience with some of them,” Ponder head coach Glen Schuelke said. “Bad things happen every now and then and a couple of them hurt us, but you got to keep playing,”

Ponder (1-2) was shut out in the first half, but the second half was the Trey Dunlap show. The halfback had 83 yards rushing on 22 carries. He also had a big night in the passing game, throwing for 87 yards and a score on only three completions, including a bomb to receiver Dustin Ferguson for 58 yards.

On the other side of the ball, Ponder struggled to stop the Castleberry rushing attack in the first half, but held them to only one rushing touchdown in the second half.

Castleberry led the entire game, but Ponder made things interesting in the fourth quarter with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Spencer Waldo that went 80 yards. But a failed extra point and a failed two-point conversion put Ponder down by 2 late in the game. Castleberry, however, sealed the win with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“We have been struggling, but we played as good as you can in the second half offensively,” Schuelke said. “We had a chance and you can’t be upset about that.”

Ponder next plays host to Nocona on Friday.
