Football: Ellis scores TD hat trick in Krum victory

PARADISE — For the first 43 minutes of the game, only two Krum players touched the ball on offense — and that was all the team needed to run over Paradise 27-7 on Friday night.

Brennan Ellis carried the ball 31 times for 234 yards and caught three passes for 62 yards, totaling three touchdowns for Krum (2-2).

“Right now, we’re trying to keep it simple and make some plays,” head coach Gary Robinson said. “We’re just going to ask the offensive line to grind it out and move the chains.”

Quarterback Colten Graham had only six passing attempts, throwing an interception and completing three passes, but one helped turn the tide of a game tied at 7-7. With Paradise driving inside Krum territory with 1:35 left to play in the second quarter, Tyron Emery registered his third interception of the year by picking off quarterback Dillon Meadows. On the next play, Graham and Ellis connected for a 41-yard touchdown strike to take the lead into halftime.

“We caught them by surprise with a wheel [play],” Ellis said. “It definitely set the tone and made us come out stronger and fired up in the second half.”

It was a disappointing homecoming for Paradise (0-4), which moved the ball but was hampered by four turnovers. The Panthers’ offense took a different approach from Krum, spreading the ball out to eight players on offense.

Quarterback Dillon Meadows completed 11 of 24 passing attempts for 96 yards and two interceptions. Taylor Edwards ran the ball 13 times for 45 yards, Tanner Valentine seven times for 37 yards and six other players combined for 24 yards on 10 carries.

On fourth-and-10 at the 50-yard line, Paradise’s Jarret Holt faked a punt and completed a 26-yard pass to Cash Preather, setting up a 5-yard touchdown run by Edwards touchdown. It would be the Panthers’ only score of the game.

Krum’s only real problem was penalties — 11 for 91 yards.

“The problem we had with the penalties we think that we can fix,” Robinson said. “It was inexperience.”

Krum will travel to Wichita Falls to face Hirschi for its third straight game on the road next week. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
