Football: Strong-running Burkburnett whips Krum

KRUM — Krum’s disappointing season continued Friday night with a 38-14 loss to Burkburnett, which gashed the Bobcats for 367 yards on the ground.

Last season, Krum (2-4) blew out Burkburnett (3-3) 68-0. But with the starting quarterback dismissed from the team and the starting running back injured all season, Krum is much younger and less experienced than head coach Gary Robinson expected.

“No matter the circumstances, [the players] overcome adversity,” Robinson said. “We’ve had to do that since the first week of the season.”

Burkburnett set the tone with a seven-minute opening drive that spanned 12 plays, finished off by a 15-yard Bobby Ingram touchdown run. Quarterback Bryan Lewis threw the ball just four times in the game, completing two for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Lewis led the ground game with 21 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Marquis Askew rushed 19 times for 61 yards and a touchdown, and Ingram carried the ball eight times for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Burkburnett missed a scoring chance late in the second quarter when a 97-yard touchdown run by Marquis Askew was erased by penalty. But the Bulldogs would score twice in the second half and took a commanding 25-7 score into the fourth quarter.

“We wanted to keep on our three game [winning streak],” Burkburnett head coach Scott Boswell said. “We took a positive step tonight.”

For Krum, Brennan Ellis returned to his primary role of wide receiver after playing heavily in the backfield over the past few games. He did carry eight times for 42 yards, but caught just one pass.

“[Running back] Ian Concepcion did a pretty good job for us last week against [Wichita Falls] Hirschi,” Robinson said. “Putting Brennan out there at receiver we were hoping would open some things up for us.”

Concepcion took a majority of the carries (17) and finished with 72 yards and a score. In addition, sophomore quarterback Colten Graham completed 7 of 13 passes for 98 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

“We are young,” Robinson said. “But that’s no excuse because all of our kids are playing very hard.”

Krum will put its early-season woes behind them to prepare for the District 9-3A season, traveling to play Bridgeport (0-6) next week.
