Football: Turnovers, penalties burn Lions in loss

Comments () A Text Size

BOWIE — Ponder had its chances against the Bowie Jackrabbits (3-3, 1-1), but turnovers and penalties again cost the Lions a chance to get their first District 5-2A victory, losing 35-24.

Ponder (2-4, 0-2 district) started the game by using running back Trey Dunlap and quarterback Brady Anderson to run the ball, taking an early 10-0 lead.

After the Jackrabbits responded with a touchdown by running back Carter Shackelford, the Lions’ Spencer Waldo tried to return the ball on the ensuing kickoff. In what was the oddest play of the game, Waldo fumbled the ball in the end zone, recovered it and then proceeded to throw it at a Bowie player in the end zone. The play was ruled a fumble and it gave the Jackrabbits a 14-10 lead.

The Jackrabbits scored once more on a 5-yard run by running back Jay Ward, while the Lions scored once more before the half on a pass from Anderson to J.J. Torres.

The Lions started the second half with a huge play, as Christian Worthington picked off quarterback Garland McCoy and returned the ball 104 yards for a touchdown. The Lions could not hold the late lead, as Bowie responded with big plays down the field resulting in two more rushing touchdowns.

“We just had too many mistakes — you can’t do what we did and win the game,” said Ponder head coach Glen Schuelke.

The Ponder defense had no answer for the Bowie running game as the Jackrabbits ran for 279 yards on 47 carries.

Offensively, the Lions had 163 yards rushing and 53 yards passing. The offense stalled multiple times due to fumbles and penalties.

“We did a lot of good things, but we’ve got to continue to get better if we are going to beat anyone,” Schuelke said. “We are getting there; it’s not going to be done overnight.”
