ARGYLE — A last-minute scoring drive and a safety in the final 24 seconds helped lift Liberty Christian to a much-needed 30-27 win over Dallas Bishop Dunne on Friday night.

The Warriors (4-2, 1-1 in TAPPS I-1) found themselves down 27-21 with 1:55 remaining after taking possession at their 45-yard line. This came after the Warriors sacked Dunne (4-2, 1-2) quarterback Micah Simon on third down and forced a punt.

Moore directed an efficient drive in which the Warriors didn’t see a third down. Without any timeouts, Danny David Linahan caught three passes on the drive to help position Liberty in Falcons territory.

Facing second-and-10 at the Falcons’ 13, Moore dropped back and found Cody Hughes on a slant route. Moore caught the ball with two defenders around him and absorbed a big hit from one of them, a hit that may have propelled Hughes across the goal line with 24 seconds remaining in the game. Cole Austin’s extra point proved to be important, as it gave Liberty a one-point lead.

Hughes led the Warriors with five receptions for 71 yards.

Austin’s ensuing kickoff landed in the hands of Falcons return man Ronnie Larue 4 yards deep in the end zone. Instead of taking a knee, he brought the football out and was met by a wall of Warriors near the 10-yard line. Larue backtracked, looking for a seam, but all he found were a bunch of Warriors and their navy jerseys, as they pushed Larue back so far that they tackled him for a safety with nine seconds left, effectively ending the contest.

The Warriors overcame a 13-point first-half deficit, and Moore had a big hand in it. Moore rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown and threw for 139 yards and two additional scores. He had two big runs in the second quarter, one on third down and one on fourth down, that propelled the Warriors deep into Falcon territory and set up scores to give Liberty a 21-20 halftime lead.

Moore’s 1-yard touchdown run with 4:33 left in the second quarter cut Bishop Dunne’s lead to six points. The Warriors scored that one off a turnover courtesy of a strip by Kyleb Howell and a fumble recovery by Tanner Moseley. The Warriors then took the lead with 2:18 left in the first half with a 1-yard touchdown run by JonAaron Howell, who rushed for 85 yards.

The Falcons finally regained the lead late in the third quarter on the arm of Simon, who threw for 134 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 97 yards and two scores.

A Liberty turnover set up the scoring drive, as Bishop Dunne recovered the fumble at the Falcons’ 35. From there, Simon navigated the Falcons down the field and finished the drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Frank Tull on a corner route. That gave the Falcons a 27-21 lead.

After that the two teams jockeyed for field position and traded punts. Liberty dodged another bullet in the fourth quarter after a lost fumble by Howell gave the Falcons the ball at the Warriors’ 18. The defense made a bigc stand, eventually sending the Falcons out on downs after a Simon incompletion.
