Football: Garrett sparks Pilot Point in rout of Paradise

PILOT POINT — Pilot Point stayed undefeated in District 5-2A Division I play with a 50-2 dismantling of Paradise on Friday night, led by the play of junior quarterback Travis Garrett.

Garrett completed 10 of 11 passes — including his first nine — for 179 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for another two scores while adding 80 rushing yards on eight carries.

“Travis played well mentally,” head coach Rob Best said. “He’s always had the physical skills, but he’s really grown into the quarterback position in decision making.”

A 67-yard connection between Garrett and DaCoven Bailey two plays into the game gave Pilot Point (5-2, 3-0 district) an early lead, and the team would never look back.

Paradise (1-7, 1-3) had a chance to tie the game following a Pilot Point fumble in the red zone, driving 50 yards into Bearcats territory, but Dillon Meadow’s pass down the middle was intercepted by Jonah Fritz. Garrett would score on a 15-yard touchdown run on the ensuing drive to give Pilot Point a 14-0 lead.

“Pilot Point did a good job scheming us,” Paradise head coach Scott Broussard said. “They got some of their athletes out in space. We were worried about their speed; they got space and we didn’t make the plays.”

The Bearcats’ Tristan Jurecka finished with 11 rushes for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while DaCoven Bailey caught seven passes for 132 yards and two scores.

Paradise’s lone points came when a Pilot Point punt was snapped out of the back of the end zone for a safety. With good field position on the following drive, Paradise marched to the 1-yard line, but after being pushed back by a delay of game, Meadows threw an interception to end the scoring threat.

Meadows finished 14-for-25 passing for 117 yards but had three interceptions. Cash Preather caught four passes for 52 yards and Tanner Valentine added five catches for 38 yards.

But the Paradise ground game never got started against a swarming Pilot Point defense. The top three running backs combined for 22 carries for 41 yards — an average of only 1.6 yards per rush.

“The defense, they’re pretty awesome,” Best said of his team. “We had some guys pick up the slack [for injuries]. We’re just hard to block up front.”

Pilot Point takes its undefeated district record on the road to Whitesboro on Friday.
