WHITESBORO — By halftime Friday, the Whitesboro Bearcats turned the showdown in what could have been for the District 5-2A Division I title into a runaway.

Whitesboro (7-1, 4-0 district) piled up 243 yards on the ground in the first half, including touchdown runs of 59, 81 and 96 yards en route to a 37-10 victory over Pilot Point at Bearcat Stadium.

With the victory, Whitesboro clinches a playoff spot and can seal a share of the 5-2A crown with a win in the final two weeks.

Pilot Point (6-3, 4-1), which is off in week 10, suffered its first district loss. It will close out the regular season at Massey Stadium against Bowie next week.

After both teams short-circuited on drives inside the 10 and had to settle for field goals, Whitesboro broke the tie with the first of three big running plays in the second quarter.

Bryce Chaney rumbled 59 yards straight up the middle of the field to put Whitesboro up 10-3.

On the ensuing drive, Pilot Point stalled at the Whitesboro 37 and punted. Travis Garrett pinned Whitesboro at the 4 with his pooch punt that rolled out of bounds.

Whitesboro needed just one play to get out of the shadow of its own goal line with Jake Dyer breaking free for a 96-yard sprint to the end zone.

Pilot Point again moved into Whitesboro territory, but was stopped on fourth down as Clayton Stringer intercepted Bailey’s halfback pass at the goal line. Stringer returned the ball to the 45. Four plays later, Collin Kilcrease sprinted through the Pilot Point defense 43 yards for a touchdown to give Whitesboro a 22-3 halftime lead.

Whitesboro added touchdown runs from Kyle Lynn and Cody Ford in the fourth quarter. Whitesboro finished with 357 yards rushing.

Down 37-3, Pilot Point found the end zone with four seconds left on a 3-yard pass from Garrett to Bailey.

Garrett threw for 220 yards, completing 24 of his 36 attempts. He was picked off twice.

Whitesboro collected three interceptions and allowed only the one touchdown and field goal despite Pilot Point reaching the red zone four times.
