KELLER — Down at halftime for the first time this season, the Denton Broncos’ offense had amassed just 187 yards, but the second half was a different story.

Despite Keller Timber Creek wide receiver Eric Ezukaunma pulling in 14 catches for 282 yards and three touchdowns, the Broncos played mistake-free football and got their offense into high gear.

Denton scored the final two touchdowns of the game and its defense came through in the clutch, forcing a fumble on its own 4-yard line to keep the Falcons from taking the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

That allowed the Broncos to put together a crucial eight-play drive for breathing room to hold off Timber Creek for a 37-28 victory and stay undefeated at 4-0.

The Falcons, who suffered their first loss, took a 28-23 lead on a 52-yard pass to Ezukaunma from quarterback Cade Schrader with 2:24 left in the third quarter.

The Broncos answered with a six-play drive that started with a 50-yard run by running back Caleb Osuofa, who finished with 180 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

The score gave Denton a 30-28 lead eight seconds into the fourth quarter.

On the Falcons’ ensuing drive, they marched eight plays and 64 yards into Bronco territory, but that’s when Denton senior linebacker Drake Foster jumped on a Schrader fumble with 7:03 left.

Denton then went to its ground-and-pound attack, as it used five rushes and one pass to get the ball down to the Falcons’ 37-yard line.

Denton quarterback Colt Atkinson then found Lavandis Douglas for a 36-yard pass to set up Osuofa for an easy 1-yard touchdown.

On the Falcons’ first possession of the game, Dylan McCrary’s 17-yard run helped set up Timber Creek for its first score.

Schrader found Jerome Jackson for a 29-yard touchdown in the slot to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead 5:24 into the game.

Denton responded with its own brand of passing and running, using a 29-yard hookup from Atkinson to Adrian Wilson to get the ball down to the Falcons’ 11-yard line.

Wilson then punched in an 11-yard touchdown, weaving his way up the middle of the Falcons’ defense to tie the game at 7 with 4:54 left in the opening quarter.

After the Falcons missed a 31-yard field goal, Denton got right back to work on offense, using an eight-play drive to take a 14-7 lead with 1:57 left in the quarter.

Atkinson found receiver Lavandis Douglas for a 38-yard connection down the Falcons’ 1-yard line, where Osuofa punched in a 1-yard touchdown.

It was Timber Creek’s time to respond, as Cade Schrader and Eric Ezukaunma hooked up for the first of two first-half touchdowns.

Schrader, who was 11-of-14 for 260 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and finished with 415 yards and four touchdowns, found Ezukaunma open in the middle of the field and he was able to outrun the entire Denton defense for a 48-yard touchdown to even the game at 14.

Ezukaunma looked to have scored on the Falcons’ next drive, but a penalty called back an 87-yard score. Instead, the Falcons settled for a punt that was fumbled into the end zone for a safety to give Denton a 16-14 lead.

But Ezukaunma got another chance on the Falcons’ next play, as he again caught the ball in the middle of the field and outraced the Denton defenders to the end zone for a 77-yard touchdown.

That gave the Falcons a 21-16 lead headed to halftime.

The Bronco offense shot out of the gates in the second half, needing only three plays to take the lead at 23-21.

Atkinson found Miller, who easily beat his man down left sideline for a 65-yard touchdown just 1:25 into the half.
