Track and field: Guyer off to good start at District 6-6A meet

The District 6-6A track meet kicked off on Wednesday at Murphy's Kimbrough Stadium, and a trio of Guyer girls qualified for next week's area meet against District 5-6A.

Freshmen Christalee Kirby and Jade Thompson qualified for the area meet in the shot put. Kirby's throw of 38 feet, 2 inches was good for third place, and Thompson's throw of 36-4 1/2 placed her in fourth, as the top four finishers in each event qualify for the area meet.

In the girls long jump, junior Eni Akinniyi finished fourth with a jump of 17-8 to qualify for the area meet. She will go for another spot at the area meet in Thursday's final for the triple jump, which is her better event with a season-best jump of 37-9 1/2.

The majority of the events will be decided on Thursday with several field event finals to go with all running finals aside from the 3,200-meter run, which was contested on Wednesday.

On the boys side, Guyer's 800 relay team of Kansas signee Javan Reece, Asa Harris, Joseph Fletcher and Brock Thompson is a favorite to advance with its season-best time of 1:28.70.

Reece will also have a good chance of advancing in both hurdles events as he enters the meet with a season-best time of 14.93 in the 110 hurdles and a 38:59 in the 300 hurdles. Thompson will also run in the 100, as he enters the meet with a time of 10.67. Senior Kevin Metzler enters the 800 with a time of 1:58.

In girls action on Thursday, the Lady Wildcats will look to push more girls through to the area meet. Kirby, who advanced Wednesday in the shot put, has the best distance in the discus entering the meet with a throw of 118-2. Junior Payton Duesing has one of the better times in the 800 with her mark of 2:21.27.

The area meet with 5-6A and 6-6A will be at Justin Northwest on April 20-21.
