Baseball: Costly Braswell errors lead to 10-4 loss to Sherman

LITTLE ELM — At the end of the third inning, the Braswell Bengals were trailing by just two runs at 5-3, but when all was said and done their errors proved too detrimental.

Sherman capitalized on six Bengal errors and answered Braswell's three-run third with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth on the way to a 10-4 win Thursday.

"They're a very talented team and they put the ball in play hard, so if you have some defensive flaws, they are going to jump out at you," Braswell coach Donnie Watson said. "The game will show your flaws in a hurry. We just couldn't stop the bleeding. We couldn't get the ball down or command the strike zone, which is what we've done probably 80 percent of the year."

A two-out double by Sherman (15-10, 7-2 District 5-5A) got the second inning going for the Bearcats and a hit batter and error loaded the bases for David Bedgood, who ripped a shot to the right-center field wall for an inside-the-park grand slam.

After another Sherman double and Braswell error, the Bearcats had a 5-0 lead, forcing Braswell starter Alec Lawrence from the game for Jordan Jones after 1 2/3 innings pitched.

Braswell (11-15, 4-4) settled down in the top of the third with a 1-2-3 inning and got on the board in the bottom of the frame.

A leadoff error and infield single set up Chase Fields for an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-1. Alec Lawrence drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 5-2, and Drake Ayala used an RBI single to slice the lead to 5-3.

But just as soon as Braswell found its offense, Sherman used two leadoff singles in the fourth, a two-run triple by Bedgood and an RBI double to pad its lead to 8-3.

Braswell got a run back in the fifth on an Ayala RBI single to make it 10-4, but that was after the Bearcats scored off back-to-back errors by the Bengals in the fifth.

Watson was encouraged by the Bengals' offense against Sherman pitcher Bedgood.

"We were 4-3 coming into the game, but when you play somebody that is as good or better than you and you don't pitch or play defense, it's going to hurt you," Watson said. "We had a lot of two-strike base hits tonight, which was the most positive thing I've seen from our offense all year, so I think the pieces of the puzzle are all there."
