Softball/baseball roundup: Lady Broncos keep playoff hopes alive

WICHITA FALLS -- Denton kept its playoff hopes alive with a 13-7 win over Wichita Falls Rider on Thursday but will need to take care of business down the stretch.

The Lady Broncos trailed 6-3 after two but used a four-run fourth and a five-run fifth to take control. Pitcher Riki Haase allowed just three earned runs in seven innings and racked up eight strikeouts to hold Rider in check after the early outburst.

Haase also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Mailey Harris added three RBIs for the Lady Broncos, who scored 10 of their 13 runs with two outs.

Denton will take on Braswell at 7 p.m. next Friday and needs to either win that game or get help from Rider to make the playoffs.

Ryan 11, Wichita Falls 0

Behind the dominance of pitcher Brianna Leeds, Ryan dominated Wichita Falls to bounce back from a close loss to Sherman.

It was Leeds' 17th win, and the junior gave Wichita Falls no chance to get anything going. Leeds finished with a complete game and allowed just two hits while racking up 10 strikeouts.

It was Abby Buettner who helped the Lady Raiders break things open. Buettner went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a home run. Leeds added two hits and drove in two runs.

Ryan will return to action next at 6:30 p.m. next Friday against Wichita Falls Rider.

Denison 9, Braswell 4

DENISON -- Braswell jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the third but quickly allowed Denison to explode for eight runs in the bottom half, and the Yellow Jackets pulled away.

The Lady Bengals were never able to recover after the eight-run inning and managed just two more runs in a comeback attempt in the seventh.

Braswell's AJ Frausto and Sydney Russell led the way with two hits and two RBIs apiee, while Britain Hartzell went six innings in the circle, allowing four earned runs and 10 hits.

Five of Denison's nine runs were unearned and scored on account of four errors.

The Lady Bengals will take on Wichita Falls Rider at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wylie 7, Guyer 3

WYLIE -- Guyer fell into a deep hole against Wylie and was unable to climb out.

The Lady Wildcats allowed Wylie to jump out to a 7-0 lead before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. Wylie outhit Guyer 13-6.

Guyer's Ashleigh McDurmon got the start and allowed seven runs on 13 hits. Maddy Holder was the leader at the plate, finishing with two RBIs.

Guyer will return to action against McKinney Boyd at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lake Dallas 6, Carrollton Creekview 2

CORINTH -- Lake Dallas used a four-run sixth to pull away from Carrollton Creekview.

Autumn Graham outdueled Creekview's Kaylee Culpepper, finishing with a complete game and allowing two runs on two hits to go with seven strikeouts.

Tied at 2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Falcons scored four runs.

Graham drove in two runs to help her own cause. Aubrey Meyers, Haley Golden and Kaitlyn Hyde drove in one run apiece.

Lake Dallas will take on Little Elm at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

WICHITA FALLS -- After jumping out to an early lead, Denton had to fend off a Wichita Falls rally.

The Broncos led 3-1 after the second, but the game was tied at 5 after Wichita Falls scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Broncos responded with two runs in the fifth to secure a lead that held the remainder of the night.

Luke McDougall was credited with the win after throwing 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs and two hits while tallying six strikeouts. It was a balanced effort at the plate, as Michael Haney, Brooks Bedinger, Samson Hudson, Parker Smith and Rece Parker each drove in a run.

Denton will visit Denison at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Guyer 13, Wylie 2

WYLIE -- Guyer scored four runs in the first and added six in the sixth to fuel a commanding win over Wylie.

It was the second straight dominant pitching performance for the Wildcats over Wylie, as three pitchers -- Lee Livingston, Bryson Casmir and Michael King -- combined to allow just two runs on three hits. Livingston was credited with the win after going 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Guyer's Jordan Beminio went 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Trevor Sessions, Connor Herriage, Ryan McCans, Devin Mars and Reid Wilhoit drove in a run apiece.

Guyer will take on McKinney Boyd at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

CORINTH -- It took just five innings for Lake Dallas to blow past Carrollton Creekview in a game that was shortened due to the run rule.

Tied at 1 entering the bottom of the third, the Falcons exploded for 13 runs in the frame. Tyler Duffey shut Creekview down on the mound. Duffey went all five innings, allowing four hits and one run to go with six strikeouts.

Lake Dallas took advantage of four errors to spark the big third inning. Ryan Depperschmidt led the way with three RBIs while Kyle York and Braden Maiwald drove in two runs apiece.

The Falcons will return to action at Little Elm at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
