Track and field: Guyer girls fall just short of regional berths at area meet

A pair of Guyer girls fell just short of qualifying for the regional meet after finishing fifth in their events as the area meet between Districts 5-6A and 6-6A got underway Thursday at Justin Northwest.

The top four finishers in each event at the area meet advance to the Class 6A Region I meet at Texas-Arlington's Maverick Stadium on April 28 and 29. The top two finishers there will earn automatic berths in the UIL state meet along with the state's best nonqualifier from the four regional meets.

Guyer freshman Christalee Kirby, who won the 6-6A championship last week, finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 3 inches — two inches shy of fourth place and the final qualifying spot for regionals. Kirby will compete in the shot put Friday.

Junior Eni Akinniyi finished fifth in the long jump at 17-7 1/2. Akinniyi will compete in the triple jump, which is the stronger of her two events, Friday afternoon with a regional berth on the line.
