Football: Denton can't find late-game magic in close loss to The Colony

THE COLONY — Denton has been playing nothing but down-to-the-wire games this season. In each case, the Broncos used a few late-game heroics to eke out a win.

On Friday, they couldn't recapture the same magic.

The Colony pounded out 203 rushing yards thanks largely to the combo of Jadan Abdallah and Myles Price, including a big touchdown run from Price with 7:44 left to reclaim the lead and nab a 28-24 win at Tommy Briggs Cougar Stadium.

Denton (2-1) still had a chance to steal the win as it had the ball at The Colony 42-yard line late in the game. But Landry Kinne's fourth down pass fell incomplete with 4:28 on the clock, and the Cougars proceeded to run the ball on six straight plays before lining up in victory formation.

"We had two bad plays in the second half, and it cost us the game," Denton coach Billy Miller said. "These guys fought their tails off. We should have won the game. I hurt for them."

Box score: Denton at The Colony

The loss is Denton's first under Miller and hung a dark cloud over an otherwise stellar outing from sophomore running back Xylohn Posey. Posey carried the ball 20 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns. His 47-yard touchdown run with 4:41 left in the third quarter got Denton back into a game it was trailing 21-10.

Elijah Thibodeaux intercepted quarterback Mikey Harrington on The Colony's next possession to set up another Denton touchdown drive. With the Cougars focusing on Posey, Kinne found Kollin Buris for a 32-yard score down the sideline.

That score gave Denton a 24-21 lead, its first of the game.

But The Colony run game was too much. Abdallah finished with 97 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries while Price added 79 yards and a touchdown. The Cougars' game-winning touchdown drive consisted of 10 plays — all runs.

Miller said before the game that he was prepared for The Colony to run the football, but the Cougars had more success through the air early on as they scored their first two touchdowns on pass plays of 37 and 64 yards, respectively.

Denton stayed within striking distance, getting a 3-yard score from Posey and a 43-yard field goal to trail 14-10 at halftime. What frustrated Miller was his team had plenty of chances to break the game open. On the play before Kinne's failed fourth-down conversion, Posey was dropped for a 3-yard loss on a third-down-and-one play from the Cougars' 38.

Denton finished the night with three turnovers, including two fumbles.

"We've got to get better day by day," Miller said. "We have a bunch of young guys who need to understand that practice tempo matches game tempo. If they figure that part out, this team is going to be very hard to beat."
