Football roundup: Krum knocks off Lake Worth for first win

LAKE WORTH — Krum's Donald Brown rushed for 203 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Bobcats recorded their first victory of 2017 with a 41-29 win against the Lake Worth Bullfrogs.

Krum's running attack produced six touchdowns with Chase Towers and Deontrell Butts scoring twice. Krum finished with 306 yards rushing and added 174 more yards through the air.

The Bobcats (1-3) did all of their damage in the first half, jumping out to a 34-6 advantage. The Bullfrogs (0-4) rallied with 23 second-half points, 16 in the final quarter, to pull within 12.

Krum will be back in action on Thursday night when it travels to Carrollton Creekview.

Aubrey 45, Benbrook 13

BENBROOK — Aubrey's Pablo Vera scored three touchdowns, and Taylor Swarbrick scored twice as the Chaparrals rolled.

The Chaparrals (3-1) held a 14-13 halftime lead before erupting for 31 second-half points against the Bobcats (2-2).

Vera had scoring runs of 5, 3 and 29 yards and finished with 138 yards on 16 carries. Swarbrick ran 4 yards for one touchdown and caught a 16-yard pass from Jeff Wilbert for another score. Aubrey's other touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Spencer Neumann.  Landon Stewart kicked a 22-yard field goal and added three extra point kicks.

Aubrey finished with 347 yards of offense while holding Benbrook to 243 yards.

The Chaparrals travel to Pottsboro next Friday.

Gunter 43, Pilot Point 11

GUNTER — The Gunter Tigers, the state's top-ranked Class 3A team in the latest AP poll, got off to a sluggish start against Pilot Point before regaining its poise and cruising.

Zach Lowe's 9-yard scoring run with 3:18 left in the opening quarter got the Tigers (4-0) into the lead, and they never looked back.

Quarterback Ethan Everson connected with Braiden Clopton on a 60-yard scoring  toss early in the second quarter, and moments later, Dylan Jantz intercepted a Pilot Point pass and returned it 47 yards for a score. The Tigers scored again on a Peyton Lowe 9-yard run to take a 29-0 lead.

Pilot Point finally got on the board late in the half after Quincy Kemp's interception set up a 35-yard field goal by Pilot Point's Jaime Tavera as time expired in the first half .

Gunter added a two more touchdowns in the third quarter before Pilot Point got its lone touchdown of the night after Jordon Harris recovered a fumble with 7:18 left in the game. Three plays later, Jacob Pitts found the end zone on a 3-yard run.

The Bearcats (1-3) will be at home next Friday to face Brock, the No. 7-ranked team in Class 3A.

Calvary 52, Savoy 32

SAVOY — Calvary rallied from a five-point halftime deficit with 24 third quarter points and rolled to  victory.

Runningback PJ Orr, quarterback Jacob Helzer and receiver Luke Wakeland all scored multiple touchdowns as the Lions improved to 3-1 on the season. Savoy is now 0-4.

Trailing 25-20 at the intermission, Calvary quickly took control of the game in the third quarter. Helzer hit Wakeland with a 25-yard scoring strike, and Beck Hillman added the extra point for a 28-25 lead.

Orr then scored twice on runs of 34 and 61 yards, and Hillman added extra point kicks to cap the third-quarter barrage.

Orr finished the evening with 147 yards rushing on 12 carries and also had a a 47-yard touchdown catch from Helson in the first quarter. Helzer had 141 yards rushing on 16 carries with scoring runs of 9 and 17, and he was 4-of-9 passing for 93 yards and three scores. Wakeland had three catches for 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Calvary will return home next week to face Crowley Nazarene.

Ponder powers past S&S Rams

SOUTHMAYD — The Ponder Lions rolled to a 40-7 victory over the S&S Consolidated Rams Friday night to even their season record at 2-2.

Ponder will be at home next Friday to play Santo.
