Volleyball roundup: Sanger defeats Argyle to open 9-4A play

SANGER —  If the outcome of Friday night's District 9-4A opener between the Sanger Lady Indians and the Argyle Lady Eagles is any indication, the league race is going to be wide open.

Sanger (15-14, 1-0) rode the play of Sydney Price, Gabbi Roelofs, Kaela Wilkerson, Mya Afflerbach and Kenzie Turkoly to a three-set sweep against the defending 9-4A champion Lady Eagles, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.

Price led the Lady Indians with 11 kills and 5 1/2 blocks, Roelofs had nine kills and three aces, Wilkerson had eight kills and two aces, Afflerbach had five kills and six aces and Turkoly finished the evening with 31 assists, one ace and one kill.

Sanger will be home Tuesday night to host Decatur while Argyle travels to Gainesville.

Krum d. Gainesville

KRUM — The Krum Lady Cats got their 9-4A campaign started with a dominating 25-8, 25-14, 25-6 victory against the Gainesville Lady Leopards.

The Lady Cats (25-8, 1-0) were led by Rhett Robinson's 24 kills. Reese Robinson had seven kills and six aces, Payton Lucas had six kills and Cali Marquis finished with four blocks.

Bridgeport visits Krum on Tuesday night while Gainesville will be at home to host Argyle.

Guyer d. Plano

Behind Kate Cowan's three aces and 19 digs and Brooke Slusser's nine kills, nine digs, 12 assists, one ace and two blocks, the Guyer Lady Wildcats swept Plano  in District 6-6A action, 30-28, 25-21, 25-22.

Also in standout roles for the Lady Wildcats (25-9, 3-2) were Jordyn Williams with 10 digs, four blocks and 12 kills, Rachel Tullos with nine kills and five blocks and Angel Felan with seven digs and 19 assists.

Wylie will visit Guyer on Tuesday night.

Ryan d. Denton

The Ryan Lady Raiders had to rally after a first-set loss before rolling to a 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 victory against cross-town rival Denton Lady Broncos.

The victory kept the defending District 5-5A champs unbeaten in the 2017 race at 4-0 and 22-11 overall.

Ashley Schroeder helped lead the way for Ryan with 10 kills, three blocks and 22 digs while Kenzi Valadez had two aces, 34 digs and two assists. Krystal Barringer had six kills and 11 digs, Nicole Schroeder had one ace and 11 digs, Sarah Grant had seven kills and six digs, Taylor Brann had 38 assists, 21 digs, four kills and one ace and Taylor Terry had 33 digs, 20 kills and two aces.

Ryan will be on the road Tuesday at Wichita Falls.

Celina d. Aubrey

CELINA — The Aubrey Lady Chaparrals' hopes of a positive start in the District 11-4A race were dashed as the Celina Lady Bobcats rolled to a  sweep, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19.

Kaia Saylor led the Lady Chaps (13-17, 0-1) with 15 kills, Katherine Knight handed out 28 assists, Laney Roos had 22 digs and Rachael Housewright had one block.

Aubrey will travel to Bonham on Tuesday night.

Ponder d. Red River Rattlers

PONDER — The Ponder Lady Lions had to rally after losing the first two sets to storm back and defeat the Red River Rattlers 8-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-4 in non-district action.

Meagan Cope led the Lady Lions (16-15) with 15 kills and nine digs. Sterling Wilkinson had 12 kills, Caroline Hicks had nine kills and eight digs and Bailey Frenette, Kylee Anderson and Sadie Dearing had 15 digs each.

Ponder will return to District 9-3A action on Tuesday when it travels to play Sadler S&S Consolidated.
