Volleyball roundup: Rider upsets Ryan, snaps Lady Raiders' district win streak

WICHITA FALLS — The Ryan Lady Raiders had themselves a win streak of 20 District 5-5A games that went back to 2015 going into Friday night's matchup against Wichita Falls Rider. 

Rider, in dominating fashion, ended Ryan's streak with a three set sweep, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21.

Even in a losing effort, Kenzi Valdez and Taylor Brann did not go down easily. Valdez collected a team high 32 digs and three aces, Brann put up a good offensive effort with 15 assists, three aces and one kill.

Ryan falls to 25-12 overall, 7-1 in 5-5A, and will have Tuesday night off before attempting to get back on track next Friday night when they travel to Sherman. 

Krum d. Sanger

KRUM — After dropping a close first set, Krum was able to pick itself up and take the next three with ease to beat Sanger 28-30, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 and remain undefeated in District 9-4A play.

Rhett Robinson had a huge performance, collecting 29 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Reese Robinson was right there with her with 16 kills and 16 digs. 

 Krum (29-8, 5-0) will travel to Gainesville at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Guyer d. McKinney

MCKINNEY — After suffering a loss Tuesday night, Guyer was able to redeem itself with a hard-fought, five-set win against McKinney, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-17, 15-7.

A handful of Lady Wildcats contributed in the victory, but Brooke Slusser seemed to do a little bit of everything with her 27 assists, 22 digs and five kills. Kate Cowan also was big for Guyer, leading the team with 32 digs.

Guyer (28-10, 6-3) will head to Plano West at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for more District 6-6A action.

Ponder d. Pottsboro

PONDER — Ponder continues to be successful in District 9-3A as it cruised to a three-set victory against Pottsboro, 25-16, 25-10, 25-17. 

Ponder was led by Meagan Cope's 13 kills, 13 digs and two aces, as well as good defensive performances from Bailey Frenette and Sadie Dearing. Both had 10 digs. 

Next up, Ponder (19-16, 6-2) heads to Gunter at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Aubrey d. Princeton 

PRINCETON — Aubrey got its second sweep in a row, this time by dominating the Princeton Lady Panthers, 25-15, 25-13, 25-12.

Katherine Knight took charge of the offense with 28 assists. Kaia Saylor was her main target, racking up 18 kills while also having 17 digs and one block on the defensive side. 

Aubrey (17-18, 4-1) will continue District 11-4A action when it hosts Celina at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Denton d. Braswell

LITTLE ELM — The Lady Bengals fought hard but couldn't quite finish against Denton, losing 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Maddi Brown led the defense with a team-high 25 digs. Jalen Ward also was a key for Braswell with her 21 assists, 10 digs, three kills and one ace.

Braswell continues District 5-5A play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when it travels to take on Sherman.
