Basketball roundup: Ryan opens Frisco tourney with win; Denton, Guyer struggle


FRISCO -- The Ryan Lady Raiders used a big second quarter grab the lead and then held off McKinney North down to the stretch to take a 48=45 win in the opening round of the Frisco ISD Tip Off Classic tournament Thursday,

Ryan trailed 11-7 after the opening quarter before outscoring North 18-5 in the second quarter to pull out to a 25-16 halftime advantage.

Jadan Mitchell led the scoring for Ryan (2-0) with 10 points. Kayra Thompson had nine, Tija Burns had eight and Halle Rucker finished with seven.

Ryan will be back in action Friday morning when it faces Duncanville at 9 a.m.

Mansfield Timberview 57, Denton 39

FRISCO — The Denton Lady Broncos opened the Frisco Invitational with a 57-39 loss to Mansfield Timberview on Thursday. A tough first quarter proved to be a difference for the Lady Broncos, as they were outscored 16-5 to start the game. 

Denton's Ky'lie Scott led all scorers with 23 points. 

The action will continue for Denton in the tournament through Saturday.

Colleyville Heritage tournament

COLLEYVILLE — The Guyer Lady Wildcats suffered two losses in the first day of the Colleyville Heritage tournament, losing to South Grand Prairie 57-39, and to Arlington Lamar, 61-38.

Against South Grand Prairie, Guyer trailed 16-15 after the first quarter but was then outscored 41-24 in the final three quarters.

Offense was evenly distributed for Guyer, but Jade Thompson had a team-high 10 points. 

Against Lamar, Guyer trailed by eight after the first quarter and Lamar increased its lead in the final three quarters.

A'Lexiss Benton led Guyer scoring with 18 points.

The tournament continues through Saturday.
