Basketball roundup: Lady Lions start home tournament 2-0


PONDER — The Ponder Lady Lions opened their home tournament Thursday with a 43-34 victory over the Haslet Eaton Lady Eagles. 

Kylie Green led the charge for the Lady Lions with a team-high 15 points. Kelly Akins was right behind with 12, hitting four 3-point shots. 

Ponder finished out the day with a 64-32 win over Wichita Falls Hirschi.

Akins was the top scorer this time around, collecting a game-high 16 points. Also putting up big points were Macy Popplewell with 13 and Chloe Poole with 12.

Ponder's tournament will continue through Saturday.

Lake Dallas 44, Fort Worth Arlington Heights 42

THE COLONY — Lake Dallas competed in The Colony tournaments and started off with a very close victory over Fort Worth Arlington Heights.

 Despite being out scored 12-7 in the final quarter, the Lady Falcons were able to hold on and get the win. 

Morgan Helixon was the difference maker for Lake Dallas, leading all scorers with 16 points. 

In their second game of the day, Lake Dallas fell behind the Lucas Lovejoy Lady Leopards in the first half and were not able to fight their way back in a 52-33 loss.

Helixon again put up team-high 16 points in the losing effort.

The Lady Falcons will continue to compete in the tournament through Saturday.

Sanger 48, Hebron 41

THE COLONY — Also competing in The Colony tournament, Sanger was able to come out on top in its opening game against Hebron. 

The Lady Indians were down 33-32 entering the fourth but were able to outscore Hebron 16-8 to finish the game. 

Maci Turkoly led all scorers in the game with 17 points to be a key factor for Sanger in the victory.

Sanger used an explosive opening quarter to edge out McKinney Boyd 36-34 and pick up its second victory of the tournament.

That 17-point first quarter proved to be vital for the Lady Indians, as they jus escaped suffering their first loss of the season.

Maci Turkoly again was again the leading scorer, collecting 12 points.

Tournament play continues for Sanger through Saturday.

BELLS — Competing in the Bells tournament, the Aubrey Lady Chaps were not able to come back from a 34-12 deficit at halftime against Decatur in their opening game of the weekend. 

Kaia Saylor was Aubrey's top scorer with 11 points. Kathimae Dow contributed nine points.

The Lady Chaps suffered a second loss, 47-35 to the Howe Lady Bulldogs. Aubrey trailed by two points entering the fourth but was held to six points.

Dow and Saylor again took charge of the most of the offense, as Dow had 13 points and Saylor had 10.

Aubrey will continue to see action in the Bells tournament through Saturday.

Decatur 47, Liberty Christian 45

DECATUR — The Liberty Christian Warriors suffered their second loss of the season in as many games, falling by two points to Decatur.

Liberty's Jared Bravenec was the leading scorer, racking up 14 points. Skylar McCurry collected 10 points for the Warriors.

Liberty will look forward to hosting Braswell on Monday night.
