FRISCO — For a while on Friday night, it appeared a couple of big plays allowed by Lake Dallas’ secondary would doom it in its return to the postseason after a one-year hiatus.

In the end, a 97-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Depperschmidt to Ky’lee Smith capped a big third quarter for the Falcons and put them on their way to a 37-34, come-from-behind victory against Frisco Reedy at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco.

“That was a big momentum swing for us, but we knew we had to keep coming,” Depperschmidt said. “Reedy’s a good team, so we knew we had to keep playing.”

The Lions briefly reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter before Depperschmidt scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the night with less than five minutes to play, and the Falcons’ secondary came up with two fourth-quarter interceptions of Reedy quarterback Josh Foskey, who entered Friday’s game with only two picks on the season.

“We struggled [in the secondary],” Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young said. “They had 400-something yards, but the whole key to learn from it is what you do at the end. You can make plays and make up for it.”

After Depperschmidt put his team up 37-34 with a 5-yard run followed by a two-point conversion pass to Charles Williams, Jared Fenley made a diving interception with 3:58 left. Lake Dallas was forced to punt on the ensuing possession but killed more time in the process. Then, Jalen Harris intercepted a desperation heave from Foskey, who passed for 453 yards, with less than a minute left to seal the win.

Lake Dallas (7-4) moves on to face high-scoring North Forney (9-2) at 4 p.m. next Saturday at AT&T Stadium in a Class 5A Division II area-round game.

“It’s great for these guys,” Young said. “They were young when we went on a run [in 2015]. They need to realize these games aren’t ever over, and you have to keep fighting. I’m proud of them tonight. We were really banged up, and now we have a chance to get pretty healthy next week.”

Lake Dallas was playing shorthanded after several players were injured in last week’s regular-season finale against Prosper. Running backs Idsael Nava and RJ Eanes missed Friday night’s game, while Depperschmidt, defensive lineman Jakob Machuca and wide receiver Charles Williams all entered the game coming off injuries last week.

Smith finished his night with seven catches for 133 yards and the big touchdown, and Depperschmidt finished 27-of-33 for 313 yards and a touchdown through the air to go with his four rushing scores.

“[Depperschmidt's] just a gamer,” Young said. “That’s what you want at quarterback. You want your toughest kid. When you have that guy at quarterback, your team will play like that. He doesn’t say a lot, but the kids feed off him and his play. He had a couple of touchdowns where he was running over people into the end zone, and I thought that kind of set the tone for us and sparked us in the second half.”

With Smith and Williams playing limited time at running back, Young also leaned on junior varsity call-up Ike Onyekwere and said he was proud of his offensive line for allowing him to keep Reedy’s defense honest. Reedy sacked Depperschmidt three times tonight, a week after he was harassed for 48 minutes against Prosper.

“I thought our O-line was great tonight,” Young said. “They had a hard time last week, and they did a great job protecting the quarterback and we were able to run enough to keep them honest. It was huge.”
