Basketball roundup: Guyer opens up weekend with dominating victories


MANSFIELD — The Guyer Wildcats continued their undefeated campaign Thursday with a dominant 97-72  win over Dallas W.T. White to open the Mansfield Spring Creek BBQ Tournament.

The Wildcats had a 50-29 lead at halftime and did not let that margin get any smaller. 

Jalen Wilson led the charge for Guyer with a team-high 20 points. Not far behind him were JaKobe Coles with 18 and De'Vion Harmon with 17.

Guyer completed another 20-plus point victory in its next game, defeating Waco Midway 89-66.

Wilson was the high scorer for Guyer, this time putting up 19 points.

Sanger tournament

SANGER — The Sanger Indians opened their home tournament with a tight win over Whitesboro, 46-45. The Indians outscored Whitesboro 10-2 in the third quarter. 

Trey Henderson led the charge for Sanger with 20 points.

Sanger then was defeated by Nocona 52-44. The Indians were outscored 20-4 to start the game and were not able to come back.

Henderson was the top scorer for Sanger, racking up 12 points. Hank Lemons pitched in with 11 points.

The Aubrey Chaps opened their weekend with a 78-62 loss to Saginaw Boswell.

Aubrey was within one point entering the fourth quarter but was outscored 22-7 in that frame, allowing Boswell to get to the free throw line and score 17 of those points from the stripe.

Hayden Smith led Aubrey with 21 points.

Later in the day, Smith put up a team-high 21 points to lead the way in Aubrey's 64-61 victory over Lubbock Cooper. Adrian Porter racked up 19 points.

The Braswell Bengals fell to Fort Worth Paschal 59-38. MJ Leslie led Braswell with nine points.

In its second game, Braswell had a shootout with Van Alstyne that took them to overtime. Van Alystyne routed the Bengals in the extra period 11-5 to claim the 81-75 victory.

Four Bengals were able to hit shots and reach double figures this time around, as Kiran Anderson (18 points), Leslie (17), Brandon Barlow (13) and Jose Villa (11) were big contributors.

Kennedale tournament

KENNEDALE — Participating in the Kennedale tournament, the Argyle Eagles' solid defense led them to a victory over Fort Worth Western Hills, winning 54-35.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Brandon White, who racked up a game-high 18 points. Also hitting shots for Argyle were Luke Feely with 12 points and Maxwell Valentino with 11. 

Argyle went on to cruise to a 83-46 win over El Paso Riverside. The Eagles were in control the entire game, carrying a 50-11 lead after the first half.

White again was the top Argyle scorer with 15 points.

The Ryan Raiders played lockdown defense on their way to 53-26 victory over Plano John Paul II in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Tournament.

Ryan only allowed John Paul II to reach double figures in the second quarter.

Ryan's Jay Wilson put on a performance with his game-high 27 points. Tashawn Banks scored 10 points.

FORT WORTH — The Lake Dallas Falcons were unable to contain the host Saginaw Chisholm Trail Rangers and were defeated 71-47 in tournament play.

Manny Brown (11) and Pat Richardson (10) stood alone as the only Falcons to reach double figures in scoring.

Kennedale tournament

The struggles for the Denton Lady Broncos continued when they opened the weekend with a 55-49 loss to tournament host Kennedale.

The Lady Broncos had a five-point lead entering the fourth quarter but were outscored 17-6 to allow Kennedale to come back and win the game.

Jamie Means was able to lead all scorers with 19 points in the losing effort.

Pottsboro tournament 

The Krum Lady Bobcats started off the weekend at the Pottsboro tournament with a 57-36 win over Sherman.

Rhett Robinson led the charge for Krum with 17 points. Also reaching double figures in scoring were Tori Hamilton with 13 and Cali Marquis with 13.

In their second game of the day, the Lady Bobcats had another double-digit victory, defeating Honey Grove 48-32.

Robinson and Marquis again had big games for Krum. Robinson had a team-high 18 points while Marquis pitched in 14.

The Aubrey Lady Chaps faced Pottsboro in their weekend opener and fell to the Lady Cardinals 47-36.

In the losing effort, Kathiemae Dow  managed to score a team-high 22 points.

The Lady Chaps bounced back in its next game, defeating Honey Grove 63-56.

Dow again had a dominating performance, putting up 27 points. Kaia Saylor also had a standout game with 23 points.

Georgetown tournament

GEORGETOWN — The Argyle Lady Eagles fell in their opening game of the Georgetown tournament to Fort Worth Trimble Tech 45-40. 

Sydney Standifer had a game-high 18 points for the Lady Eagles.

Argyle was able to bounce back in its second game of the day by defeating Austin Bowie 56-41 behind Standifer's game-high 21 points. 

Also contributing in the victory were Rhyle McKinney, who had 11 points, and Gabby Standifer with  10 points.

Lions Club Tournament 

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — The Braswell Lady Bengals used a big fourth quarter to come out on top against Haltom in the first day of Birdville's Lions Club Tournament, 51-48. 

Braswell outscored Haltom 18-14 in that final frame. 

Sydney Tyler (12) and Kamryn Gibson (10) were the top scorers for Braswell.
