Facing a team with two SMU commits, the Denton Broncos were in for a tough night Friday against the DeSoto Eagles. The Broncos came out firing but fell 70-63.

The Broncos were kept in the game by guard CJ Luster and his game-high 19 points, as well as some opportunistic plays on the offensive side of the ball.

DeSoto's Duncan Powell, a freshman who finished with 13 points, missed a free throw, and Denton took the ball down and hit a big 3-pointer to extend its lead to eight points in the first quarter.

Those types of plays left Denton coach Harold Jackson feeling optimistic.

"Our kids played hard and I thought we executed fairly well. They had a lot of size, so it made it a difficulty to rebound," Jackson said.

DeSoto went just 13-for-27 at the charity stripe, with Denton committing 23 fouls and Trayvon Brockington fouling out with 3:45 left. Brockington finished with 11 points.

DeSoto had to deal with foul trouble early on. Emory Price opened the game with two quick fouls and was pulled from the game until the second quarter. Not long after he re-entered the game, he picked up two more fouls within five seconds of each other and was pulled from the game. Price finished with three points.

"We have moments where we really play hard, and then other moments where we kind of let up," DeSoto coach Chris Dyer said. "It's like we're waiting around for someone else to make a play."

Another surprise for Denton was the nimble ball handling of big man Brandon Coleman, who had eight points. With DeSoto utilizing a full-court press, Coleman took the ball down and drove all the way to the hoop.

"Brandon is a very good ball handler, but we need to do a better job of jump-stopping so he doesn't commit a charge," Jackson said.
