Ryan quarterback and Oklahoma State commit Spencer Sanders has been named the Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year.
Sanders, a senior, has thrown for 3,589 yards and 51 touchdowns this season and led the Raiders to a 69-49 win over Lubbock Coronado on Saturday in the Class 5A Division I Region I final. Sanders has also rushed for 1,220 yards and 14 touchdowns this season.
Sanders is only the second Ryan athlete to be selected for this honor, joining Scotty Young (2009-10). He is now a finalist for the national award, which will also be announced in December.
The annual award recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field. One National Player of the Year is chosen in each sport.
Ryan (14-0) will face Highland Park (13-1) at 9 p.m. Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
