Basketball roundup: Guyer rebounds to top Arkansas Parkview at Whataburger Tournament

After suffering its first loss of the season in a 68-66 heartbreaker Friday night to Waxahachie, Guyer bounced back with a 59-52 win against Arkansas Parkview to claim third place in the Orange Division of the Whataburger Tournament.

The No. 1 ranked Wildcats were led by De'Vion Harmon (16 points) and Jalen Wilson (15) as the team improved to 22-1 on the season. Guyer used a big first half to build a lead before holding off a second-half comeback attempt from Parkview.

The Wildcats return to District 6-6A play Jan. 5 against Wylie.

Ponder 59, Seminole 45

Ponder took home third place in the Blue Division of the Whataburger Tournament after an impressive win against Seminole, which entered the weekend as the No. 3 ranked team in Class 4A.

The Lions, who are ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, held Seminole to 18 first-half points and allowed only five points in the third quarter. Seminole found a rhythm offensively in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to overcome a big day from Tye Schluter, who led all scorers with 29 points.

Schluter earned all-tournament honors for his performance over the weekend. Ponder will return to action against Argyle at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Argyle recovered from an opening-round loss in the Blue Division of the Whataburger tournament to knock off Liberty Hill in the consolation championship.

The Eagles were slow out of the gate and managed only five points in the first quarter, but they pulled ahead in the fourth after outscoring Liberty Hill 16-5. Max Valentino led all scorers with 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Argyle will take on Ponder at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Krum 66, Crandall 48

ALLEN -- Krum continued its strong showing at the Allen Tournament by taking home the Class 4A/3A/Private School trophy for first place.

Bryson Laird led all scorers with 19 points while Remi May (16) and Zach Kirk (14) had big games as well. May was named the tournament MVP while Kirk took home all-tournament honors.

Krum will return to action against Anna on Tuesday.
