Girls basketball: Sanger's Rollins named to TGCA All-Star team

After playing a key role in leading the Sanger girls basketball team to its first regional tournament berth since 1981, junior Brooke Rollins was named a Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star for Classes 1A-4A.

Rollins is one of 12 players who will compete on the all-star Red team, coached by T'Leah Eicke of Snyder and Kyle Sivadon of La Vernia. The TGCA All-Star activities will take place at a clinic in Arlington this summer.

Rollins is the first Sanger athlete to be named a TGCA All-Star since Reagan Miller in 2011. Miller went on to play college basketball at Liberty.

"She deserves it," Sanger coach Tracy Sykes said of Rollins. "She did so much for our team, and we would have never gone as far as we did without her. I'm just extremely happy for her."

Rollins averaged 10.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Lady Indians this season while shooting 34.5 percent from 3-point range. She was the hero for Sanger in the regional semifinals, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead the team past Tatum.

"Brooke is a pretty cool, collected player," Sykes said. "She doesn't get too high on emotions. All season long she would go to the free throw line during stressful games and knock those down. She stepped up in a big way."

With senior Maci Turkoly graduating, Sykes says Rollins will see more time as a shooting guard. She spent her junior year as the team's point guard and was the main facilitator of the offense.

"We're extremely excited," Sykes said. "Her role will increase even more because we're losing Maci and she'll have to produce more points for us. We're just very fortunate to get her back for one more year."

The TGCA also announced its 2017-18 Basketball Legacy All-Star selections, honoring 20 seniors from 1A-4A and 20 seniors from Classes 5A-6A. Seniors do not participate in the summer clinic all-star activities but do receive a certificate.

Argyle senior Gabby Standifer was named a Legacy All-Star after finishing with three consecutive state championships. She averaged 14.8 points, six rebounds and 3.6 assists for the season and was named to the Class 4A all-tournament team at state.
