Football: Second-half surge lifts Argyle past Madison

DALLAS — After a sluggish first half, the Argyle Eagles dominated Dallas Madison with a 25-point second half, as the Eagles entered their bye week on a high note with a 39-18 victory Friday night.

The Eagles (5-1), on a five-game winning streak, will have a week off before playing host to Carrollton Ranchview in their district opener Oct. 19.

Argyle trailed Madison (2-4) 18-14 at halftime, but the Eagles made some adjustments in the locker room, primarily on defense to contain Madison’s dangerous quarterback Russell Johnson. Johnson scored all three of Madison’s touchdowns on the ground.

Madison had only five offensive drives in the second half, three of which resulted in three-and-outs. One went five plays and was aided by a pass interference call on Argyle. The last drive of eight plays ended the game. Madison had 22 second-half plays.

The Eagles, meanwhile, scored nearly every time they touched the ball. Cole Hedlund started the scoring in the second half with a 40-yard field goal with 8:16 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 18-17. On the next drive, running back Nick Ralston scored from 10 yards out to give the Eagles the lead for good 23-17.

A cold front blew in as the game started and a stiff wind came out of the north. Argyle had the wind with them in the third quarter, but chose to keep the ball in Ralston’s hands. He finished the game with 125 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Argyle added to its lead early in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run by Chance Bode.

Then things got weird.

Hedlund’s kickoff into the wind landed at the Madison 20. But no one from Madison recovered the ball.

Argyle’s Colton Hinnrichs won the scrum for the ball, and the Eagles took over. That led to Hedlund’s 30-yard field goal.

Hedlund’s next kickoff had the same result. His kick still came down near the Madison 20. But this time two Trojans collided trying to field the kickoff. Hinnrichs again fell on the loose ball, and that led to Ralston’s 6-yard touchdown run.

Ian Sadler scored Argyle’s first touchdown of the game on a 92-yard kickoff return for a 7-6 lead.
