Football: Aubrey suffers shutout in Segleski debut

AUBREY — It wasn’t the type of debut a new coach hopes for, but you could hardly blame Aubrey’s Mike Segleski on Friday night.

Pottsboro’s senior quarterback Tanner Frye ran and passed for 234 of his team’s 346 total yards and scored twice to lead the Cardinals to a 27-0 win over the Aubrey Chaparrals in the season opener for both squads.

With six would-be starters, including the top two quarterbacks, sidelined by preseason injuries, the Chaparrals had nearly as many punts in the first half — six — as Pottsboro had first downs — seven — en route to a 14-0 halftime lead by the Cardinals.

Aubrey’s emergency starter at quarterback, freshman Rylee Hellman, wasn’t even listed in the program and was no match for Frye, who rushed for two touchdowns and 119 yards while going 9-of-20 passing for 115 additional yards and a pair of interceptions.

Receiver Dallas Sewell, who had two catches for 51 yards for Pottsboro, returned the opening kickoff of the second half 93 yards for a score, and receiver Justin Lawler had six catches for 62 yards for the winning Cardinals.

Aubrey’s best scoring threat came late in the third quarter after the first of Tanner Buxton’s two interceptions of Frye gave the Chaps the ball at midfield. Hellman opened the drive with a 14-yard pass to Sewell, but the possession ended on downs with Hellman (5-of-11 passing for 41 yards) throwing incomplete on fourth-and-4 at the Cardinals’ 30.

Segleski, a longtime assistant to legendary coach G.A. Moore, takes the reins this year at Aubrey after Moore, the winningest coach in Texas schoolboy history, stepped down in May. Among those players unavailable for the Chaps on Friday was junior quarterback Kyle Lynn, the expected starter and Moore’s grandson.

He is hoping to return in early September from a stress fracture in his foot.

Pottsboro was penalized nine times for 95 yards and had 164 yards of gains and a touchdown called back for illegal blocking penalties.
