Football: Kicking mistakes burn Aubrey against Anna

ANNA — There were plenty of high points for the Aubrey Chaparrals on Friday night. Their kicking game was not one of them.

Anna scored its first 16 points off miscues in the Aubrey kicking game and then used a strong second-half defense to defeat the Chaparrals 30-15 in the second game of the season for both teams.

Coyotes quarterback Tye Chapman threw touchdown passes of 54 and 70 yards, and Darrien Hampton returned a punt 100 yards for a score as Anna improved to 2-0 under first-year head coach Jason Heath.

Aubrey’s first-year head coach Mike Segleski will have to wait another week to get his first victory as the Chaparrals dropped to 0-2.Segleski took over this season for legendary coach G.A. Moore Jr., the winningest coach in Texas schoolboy history who retired last May after a 45-year coaching career that included eight state titles.

The Chaparrals were still without junior quarterback Kyle Lynn, but freshman Rylee Hellman was markedly improved from his first start last week. He scored on a 9-yard run and helped Aubrey to a game-high 284 yards total offense, more than double its total of 115 from the season opener. The Chaparrals gained most of that on the ground — 249 yards — but were stopped three times on fourth-down plays in the second half and could not overcome the mistakes in the kicking game that proved to be the difference.

Clay Kelly led all rushers with 81 yards and scored on an 11-yard run for the Chaparrals, who also scored a safety.

Special teams play was the difference in the first half with all of Anna’s points coming as a result of Aubrey’s punt game.

Anna scored first on Hampton’s 100-yard punt return. Aubrey’s drive had stalled just shy of midfield. Robert DeLaTorre’s punt bounced at about the 15 and went off Hampton’s hands, bouncing toward the end zone. Hampton scrambled to recover and picked the ball up just inside the goal line. He broke toward the middle of the field, cut behind some blockers and ran untouched for the score.

Aubrey came back with its only first-half score. Starting at their own 30, the Chaparrals ran six straight times before Hellman fired an 8-yard pass to Collin Scribner. Five more running plays pushed the ball to the 15. On fourth-and-1, Matt Davis barreled up the middle for 6 yards and a first-and-goal at the 9. On the next play, Hellman went left on a keeper for the touchdown.

After an exchange of possessions, Aubrey was set to punt from its own 15, but the snap sailed over DeLaTorre’s head and out of the end zone for a safety to give Anna a 9-7 lead.

The ball went right back to Anna on Aubrey’s free kick, and the Coyotes took over at their 49. After Malik Berry lost 3 yards, Chapman dropped back and found Joseph Lopez open down the left side for a 54-yard scoring play with 3:39 left in the first half and a 16-7 lead.

The Chaparrals opened the second half with an impressive drive, going 74 yards in 10 plays, capped by Kelly’s 11-yard scoring run to get within 16-13. Aubrey passed only once in the drive, and the big gain was a 25-yard rush by Davis.

But Anna needed only one play to score again. On first-and-10 from their own 30, Chapman tossed a swing pass to Berry, who broke one tackle and cut up the middle of the field for a 70-yard scoring play and a 23-13 lead.

Anna then made a mistake in its kicking game as Hampton fumbled a punt and Chris Ortiz recovered for Aubrey at the Anna 19. The Chaps could only gain 3 yards in three plays and on fourth-and-7, Anna jumped offsides. But on fourth-and-2, Duncan was stopped at the line.

Anna took over and two false start penalties moved the ball back to the 3. On the next play, Berry lost the ball and recovered, but his knee was down in the end zone for an Aubrey safety.

The Coyotes had to kick into a stiff north wind and after two penalties, they kicked from their 10 and Aubrey got the ball at Anna’s 32.

The Chaparrals could only pick up 3 yards and on fourth-and-8, Hellman’s pass was incomplete, turning the ball back over to Anna. That would be Aubrey’s last scoring threat.

Berry put the game out of reach with his 29-yard scoring run with 5:53 left in the game.
