AUBREY — It was another long night for the Aubrey Chaparrals.
The Chaparrals could not find a way to stop Whitesboro’s Collin Kilcrease, who rushed for 97 yards and returned an interception 45 yards for a score to lead the Bearcats to a 21-8 victory Friday night.
Aubrey, which dropped to 0-3 this season, could not capitalize on several opportunities against a Whitesboro defense that not only returned an interception for a score, but also twice stopped the Chaparrals on fourth down deep in scoring territory.
Aubrey junior running back Daniel Loughenry was a bright spot, rushing for a game-high 123 yards on 17 carries. His 41-yard burst up the middle late in the game set up his 1-yard scoring run to help the Chaps avert the shutout.
The loss also means that first-year head coach Mike Segleski will have to wait until next week’s game against Pilot Point to possibly get his first victory. Segleski took over this season for legendary coach G.A. Moore Jr., the winningest coach in Texas schoolboy history, who retired last May after a 45-year coaching career that included eight state titles.
Whitesboro built a 14-0 first-half lead on a 1-yard score by quarterback Devin Schares and the 45-yard interception return by Kilcrease.
The Bearcats increased their lead to 21-0 on their first possession of the second half. Kilcrease’s 29-yard run up the middle keyed a 61-yard, 9-play drive capped by Cody Grube’s 9-yard scoring run.
Aubrey came back with a strong drive. Freshman quarterback Rylee Hellman’s 22-yard pass to Robert DeLaTorre moved the ball to midfield and five running plays pushed Aubrey to the Bearcats’ 16. On third-and-2, Aubrey mishandled the ball but recovered, and then on fourth-and-4, Hellman was sacked to end the drive. That marked the second time Aubrey was stopped on a fourth-down play deep in Whitesboro territory.
Aubrey came up with its own fourth-down stop, then mounted its only scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter. Hellman completed a 13-yard pass to Tanner Buxton and Loughenry’s 41-yard burst up the middle moved the ball to the Whitesboro 14. Four plays later, Loughenry scored from a yard out with 3:03 left in the game.
The Chaparrals were held to 43 yards offense in the first half, all on the ground, and only two first downs. They ended with 196 yards offense, while Whitesboro finished with 181 total yards. Whitesboro, however, was able to come up with the big plays on both sides of the ball.
The Bearcats took advantage of excellent field position for their first score. Their first possession ended in a punt that pinned Aubrey deep in its own territory, and the Chaparrals were forced to punt from their own 10. Whitesboro took over at the Aubrey 37.
A face mask penalty advanced the ball 15 yards, Kilcrease picked up 20 yards on two carries to get the ball to the 1, and Schares scored from there on the fifth play of the drive to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead with 3:58 left in the first quarter.
Aubrey came back with its best drive of the first half. Loughenry’s 20-yard run moved the ball to the Whitesboro 35, and two plays later DeLaTorre went around the left side for a 14-yard gain to give the Chaparrals a first-and-goal at the 8. But Whitesboro’s defense did the job, forcing negative yards on two running plays, then sacking Kyle Lynn twice to end the drive.
Lynn and Hellman both played quarterback for Aubrey, but Hellman took most of the snaps. Lynn, a junior and Moore’s grandson, was expected to be the starter this season, but has been recovering from a stress fracture in his foot.
Whitesboro threatened again in the first half after Kilcrease gained 12 yards on a fake punt to get the ball to the Aubrey 40. The drive ended four plays later when Aubrey’s Cole Cannon intercepted a Schares pass at the Aubrey 38.
But two plays later, Whitesboro’s defense again came up with a big play when Kilcrease intercepted a Lynn pass and ran in from 45 yards out for the touchdown just before halftime.
