The Calvary Lions saw their chances of making the TAPPS Class 2A playoffs take a severe blow Thursday night when, for the second time in less than a week, the Lions suffered a mercy-rule loss.

Rockwall Heritage Christian scored multiple touchdowns in each quarter en route to a 66-20 victory over Calvary in a game stopped midway through the fourth quarter. Last Saturday, the Lions were overwhelmed by Dallas Covenant in a game stopped at halftime.

Heritage jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, held a 28-6 halftime advantage and led 52-12 heading into the final quarter.

The Lions (4-5, 1-3 district) had just 190 yards of offense against the Eagles — 97 yards rushing and 93 through the air. Senior running back Jesse Wells led the rushing attack with 38 yards on nine carries and scored a touchdown on an 80-yard kickoff return. He also caught two passes for 44 yards.

Calvary quarterback Justin Rush had 36 yards rushing and a touchdown on four attempts and hit five of 13 pass attempts for 84 yards and one TD. Brandon Eaton finished the night with two receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Calvary will close the regular season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Bronco Field against Dallas Tyler Street.
