KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have signed first-round draft pickand Denton High product Hunter Dozier for $2.2 million..
The Royals selected the former Willmar Stingers’ shortstop eighth overall in Thursday’s draft.
Kansas City signed the 6-foot-4 shortstop for $937,800 less than the allotted $3,117,800 for a No. 8 selection. The money can be used to sign other picks.
“I’m happy to go that high and super excited to be here,” Dozier said at a news conference introducing him to the media.
The 21-year-old Dozier led the Southland Conference with a .396 batting average, .755 slugging percentage, 25 doubles and 17 home runs for Stephen F. Austin University.
He played with the Stingers during the 2012 Northwoods League season and hit .257 with 6 home runs to make the NWL All-Star Team.
Dozier will leave Tuesday for the Royals’ complex in Surprise, Ariz., for a minicamp. After that he will be assigned to the short-season Idaho Falls affiliate, which begins play June 20 in the Pioneer League.
“I’m just looking forward to heading to Arizona tomorrow and starting this thing,” he said. “(I want to be in Kansas City) as soon as possible. Whenever they need me.”
