Guyer rolls past Denton in 5-4A play

Guyer junior quarterback Jerrod Heard sparked the high-octane Guyer offense with four of the team’s six touchdowns in the first half as the Wildcats ran away with a 62-0 victory over the Denton Broncos at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex Friday night.

In their District 5-4A opener, the Wildcats (3-2, 2-0) executed a balanced attack in the first half on their way to 142 rushing yards, led by Heard’s 63 yards on seven carries,as well as 149 passing yards by Heard. Junior running back DJ Breedlove added 53 yards on just five carries with two touchdowns in the first half on his way to 96 yards and another second-half touchdown.

“There hasn’t been a game where our running game hasn’t been effective,” Guyer head coach John Walsh said. “We feel real strong and can go a lot of different directions in our running game. When you talk about Jerrod, DJ and Richard, that’s three horses back there that you can lean on, and DJ definitely leads the way there.”

Conversely, the Broncos (2-3, 0-2) struggled to get out of their own side of the field as they threw for 93 yards and rushed for only 7 yards in the first half and 174 total yards in the game.

The Wildcats started the game as if they were shot out of a cannon as they connected on a 63-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Heard found senior Ellis Jefferson streaking down the left hash marks at the 25-yard line to take a quick 6-0 lead after a failed 2-point conversion.

After a quick three-and-out by the Broncos and a return by Guyer to the Denton 25-yard line, the Wildcats wasted no time to make it 14-0 as they ran four plays before Breedlove capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown rush up the middle of the Denton defense.

Denton looked to have come up with a momentum-changing play as senior defensive back Leon Atkinson picked off Heard at the Denton 10-yard line, butquarterback Cy Ward gave it right back to the Wildcats as senior Terrell Singleton took an interception to the Denton 17-yard line.

Two plays later, Heard took the snap in the shotgun formation and raced the Denton defender to the left pylon for the 15-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats up 21-0 with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter.

Denton then put its longest drive together down to the Guyer 12-yard line, but Ward was unable to pick up the fourth down conversion as the Broncos gave the ball up on downs.

“We didn’t start off very well,” Atkinson said. “I will say this about our kids. It’s not how many times you get knocked down; it’s how many times you get up. Our kids kept getting up and I was proud of them. We have some work to do. We’ll just have to let go of this and get ready for Old High [Wichita Falls] next week.”

Sophomore Carl Thompson recorded three sacks for the Guyer defense, several of which came on key Denton third-down plays.

“Carl is a future star,” Walsh said. “He’s still young and has a long way to go. Carl Thompson is going to be a name that a lot of people talk about for a while.”

Breedlove rushed for his second touchdown as he took the inside handoff for a 2-yard touchdown with 8:25 remaining in the second quarter, putting the Wildcats up 28-0.

After another Denton three-and-out, the Wildcats needed just three plays to make it 35-0 as Heard found senior Josh Harris on the inside route for the 16-yard touchdown.

Jefferson scored his second touchdown of the half as he survived a Denton pass-interference penalty, making the 13-yard touchdown catch in the back-left corner of the end zone to give Guyer a 42-0 lead.

“Walsh told me that it was a new CB going in,” Heard said. “Knowing he was going in I knew he wouldn’t know how I play. He was 10 yards backed up and I just had to go make a play, and I did.”

Heard returned for the first drive of the second half and led his team down for another score to put the Wildcats up 48-0.

“You want momentum in a game and for a season and I think we’ve captured it in both of these games,” Walsh said. “Hopefully we’re getting momentum for the season.”

Senior Richard Whitaker added a touchdown with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter to make it 55-0. Senior Connor McCown also added a 12-yard touchdown with 6:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 62-0.

“They have a very good chance to go deep in the playoffs, and we knew that before we played them,” Atkinson said. “It lets us know that we have a lot of work to do. We got two of the big guns out of the way and next week is going to be a big game for us.”
