Argyle quarterback MVP of DRC All-Area team

Austin Aune is used to accolades.

The Argyle senior has had his fair share of honors in the pages of the Denton Record-Chronicle and elsewhere.

The two-time defending Most Valuable Player on the Record-Chronicle All-Area baseball team, Aune is a major-league draft prospect and participated in the prestigious Area Code Games last summer.

But now he's finally received the honor that's eluded him throughout his high school career: Most Valuable Player on the Record-Chronicle 's All-Area football team.

He admitted to taking some pride in the awards, but the humble senior said they would not mean anything if not for his teams' overwhelming successes on the field. ALSO ONLINE

"It's cool," said Aune, who has committed to play football and baseball at TCU. "I don't think I could get these without a good team. These honors are all awesome, but it's more about the team than anything. I wouldn't care if I got MVP and we lost in the first round. I'd rather not get MVP and go to state. I couldn't do any of it without a good team."

In the fall the Eagles did just that, compiling a 14-2 record and reaching the Class 3A Division II state championship game, where they were topped by Wimberley at Arlington's Cowboys Stadium.

Aune played in that game despite battling flu-like symptoms the entire week and running a 102-degree fever. He finished his final high school game with 239 passing yards and a rushing touchdown.

For the season, Aune completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 3,445 yards, 33 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also was the team's second-leading rusher with 558 yards and nine touchdowns.

Aune said he can hold his head high when reflecting on his career.

"I think it's cool to leave a legacy behind and that we went to state," he said. "Obviously, we didn't win, but I think we had so many wins that we left a legacy that's going to be hard to beat.

"I'm proud of the way we ended it. It was fun. Now I'm just ready to go to the next level."
