Football: Aubrey falls in district opener

FRISCO — Aubrey gave itself every opportunity to pull off an upset Thursday night, but the Chaparrals couldn’t stop Frisco Lone Star in the fourth quarter and fell 39-28 in the District 10-3A opener for both teams.

The Chaparrals (2-5) stayed in the game using a strategy of offensive keep-away with the Rangers (6-1), who hung 51 points on Sanger last week.

For three quarters, it worked. The Chaps had a 20-19 lead at halftime, scoring on all three first-half possessions, which totaled nearly 17 minutes. The Chaps took a 28-25 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Anthony Alford, who rushed for 203 yards.

But the Aubrey defense proved unable to slow down the Rangers, who scored on all but one of their seven offensive possessions.

Lone Star answered right back with a quick scoring drive. Quarterback Will Campbell — who threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns — hit Toure Stevens for their second touchdown connection of the night, a 45-yarder with 9:42 remaining to give Lone Star a 32-28 lead.

That seemed to play into Aubrey’s hands, as it had all night. But on the ensuing drive the Chaps couldn’t drive the length of the field. Lone Star finally found a way to stop Alford, dropping him for a 1-yard gain on fourth-and-8 from the Aubrey 47-yard line with 6:01 left.

From there, Lone Star did its best to run out the clock, finishing off Aubrey with a 9-yard touchdown run by CJ Encalade with a little over a minute left.

In the first half, several gambles paid off for Aubrey. It converted nearly every fourth down it faced, including one at its own 22-yard line. Running back Matt Davis bounced off a defender and avoided putting his knee on the ground en route to a 3-yard touchdown run. The biggest one came on the final play of the half at the Lone Star 46, after a 16-yard reception by Robert DeLaTorre and a 15-yard personal foul on Lone Star.

With six seconds remaining, Aubrey set up in an I-formation running play, sucked in the inside defenders with play action and had Lynn loft a pass over the middle to Aldridge, who caught it and outran two defenders for a 46-yard touchdown as time expired.
