WICHITA FALLS -- Wichita Falls had two critical turnovers inside Lake Dallas’ 5-yard-line that proved to be the difference in the Falcons’ 20-11 win Thursday night.

Lake Dallas’ Josiah Tauaefa was the beneficiary of both mistakes by Coyote running back Robert Williams III.

The sophomore running back fumbled the ball near the goal line in the second quarter, and Tauaefa was there to pick it up and take it for a touchdown.

Then in the fourth quarter, right after a 65-yard pass from DeShaun Young to Korie Robinson put the Coyotes on the Lake Dallas 5, Tauaefa just ripped the ball away from Williams, preventing another TD.

Wichita Falls lost its sixth straight game to fall to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in District 5-4A. The Falcons improved to 4-4 and 2-3.

“Mistakes — we just made too many to beat a good football team” WFHS coach Jayson Lavender said. “We just can’t give up points and turn the ball over like we did.

“It was a sloppy football game. We fought hard but just couldn’t get it done.”

Junior Brandon Simpson got the start at quarterback for Lake Dallas after an injury last week to starter Marshall Dominy and ran 30 times for 142 yards and a touchdown.

Young completed three passes for 41 yards in a 10-play, 51-yard drive that got the Coyotes on the board first, courtesy of Chance McWhorter’s 20-yard field goal with 3:31 in the first quarter.

Lake Dallas could not get into the end zone against the Coyotes’ defense in the first half. But the Falcons still led 7-3, thanks to Tauaefa’s fumble recovery and easy TD.

Lake Dallas started its first drive of the second half at the Coyotes’ 49. It took three plays for Simpson to scoot 25 yards around the right side for a 13-3 advantage. But the extra point was blocked and Pryor Johnson scooped up the ball and headed 97 yards for the two points.

Roman Mitchell put the game out of reach with a 36-yard TD run with 8:50 to play.
