Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard, left, runs out of bounds under pressure from Birdville’s Sam Gooch during a playoff game Dec. 8 in Southlake.

In the final two games of the season, Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard showed that he was one of the state’s top players while leading the Wildcats to their first state title — a playoff run capped by a come-from-behind win over Georgetown in the Class 4A Division I final.

On Thursday, Heard was named the Offensive Player of the Year on the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 4A all-state team after accounting for seven touchdowns in the state championship game and rushing for more than 300 yards in Guyer’s state semifinal win over Tyler John Tyler.

“As we got deeper into the year, he took over a huge leadership role for our team, which we needed from that position,” Guyer coach John Walsh said. “From a physical standpoint, he just dominated the field with the ball in his hands.”

Heard, who has verbally committed to Texas, finished the season with 2,090 passing yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 2,138 yards and 35 scores.

But it was in December when Heard made his mark after a relatively boring regular season that saw him pulled after the first half in several blowouts.

“When you get to those games in December, you need your marquee players to play at a marquee level,” Walsh said. “He did it methodically, too. He and I didn’t even know he accounted for seven touchdowns [in the state final] until someone told us. That performance, on that stage, is why he deserves whatever is coming out. You don’t worry about those awards until the season is over, but that performance put the icing on the cake.”

Heard, a junior, was joined by three Guyer teammates on the team. Offensive tackle Patrick Morris, a TCU signee, was named to the first team, Arkansas Tech signee Terence Belton was named a second-teamer and junior defensive end Thomas Ferguson was selected to the third team.

Ferguson was joined on the third team by Lake Dallas defensive end Graysen Schantz, who signed with Rice earlier this month.

The Class 3A team was released late Wednesday, and Argyle landed one player on the squad. Junior safety Connor Wilson earned first-team honors after racking up 126 tackles, eight interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

Wilson was joined by Argyle teammates Jordan Deagen, a second-team offensive lineman, and second-team running back Nick Ralston. The Eagles’ multi-talented wide receiver Ian Sadler was named a second-team kick returner.

Krum had one all-state representative, as safety Travis White was named to the second team.
