Football: Hedlund headlines 3A all-state selections

Argyle senior Cole Hedlund racked up another accolade in a season during which he established himself as one of the best kickers in high school football history.

Hedlund was one of four Argyle players named to The Associated Press’ Class 3A all-state team, which was released Tuesday. Three additional Eagles received honorable mention, joining Sanger junior running back Tre’von Jackson.

The voting is based only on regular-season performance.

Hedlund knocked through 14 of 20 field goals with a long of 57 yards, and he was 68-for-68 on extra point attempts.

In Argyle’s 3A Division II bi-district playoff game against Krum, Hedlund hit his 51st career field goal and broke the national record for most career field goals. He set the national record for most field goals made in a season (25) in 2011 as a sophomore.

Argyle coach Todd Rodgers said the selection was a no-brainer.

“His accomplishments on the field speak volumes about his talent and the work he’s put in,” Rodgers said.

The Argyle kicker has orally committed to Arkansas and is ranked as the No. 5 kicker in the nation’s class of 2014 by Kohl’s Professional Camps.

Fairfield running back Larry Rose was named the 3A Offensive Player of the Year, and Navasota lineman Jordan Wells was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Argyle senior wide receiver Ian Sadler, offensive lineman Hayden Hood and defensive lineman Micah Capra were second-team selections.

Sadler, who has orally committed to Texas Tech, tallied 26 total touchdowns in the regular season (15 rushing, nine receiving, one punt return, one kickoff return). Sadler received honorable mention last season.

Rodgers said he was extremely shocked Sadler was not chosen for the first team.

“There were lots of kids that were left off, or in my opinion, some of the top players in the state of Texas that are not included in those first and second teams,” Rodgers said. “But somebody thinks otherwise, and I haven’t seen all of the state of Texas, so I reserve any judgment on the people who picked that team.”

Argyle senior linebacker Sam Sizelove (committed to Kansas State), senior defensive back Connor Wilson (committed to Texas Tech) and offensive lineman Michael Castle received honorable mention.

Argyle faces Fairfield at 4 p.m. Friday at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium in the 3A Division II state championship game. Argyle is making its third state final appearance and is seeking its first championship.
