Boys soccer: Argyle blows out Hirschi for second playoff win

WICHITA FALLS - A delayed food stop and a wrong turn once in Wichita Falls left Argyle with only 15 minutes to get ready before its Region I-4A area round game against Hirschi.

Just getting to Memorial Stadium proved to be the Eagles' biggest adversity Tuesday night.

Argyle outclassed the Huskies once it arrived, as Mats Wolthuis and Chad Hedlund scored in each half to spoil Hirschi's first playoff appearance with a comfortable 5-0 victory.

The Eagles (22-1-1) advance to the Class 4A Region I sectional round, where it will meet Aledo, which was a 2-1 shootout winner over Wichita Falls.

Argyle coach Marc Koke said that a 75-minute stop in Decatur kept the team from fitting in its full warm-up, and that sluggishness carried over into the match.

"I'm one of the most compulsive persons about being early and getting there not being rushed," Koke said. "We got here and the kids were able to stay focused.

"It took us a while to get into the flow of the game, but after about the first 10-15 minutes, I thought we looked pretty sharp."

The Eagles came in waves during the first half, scoring three times and hitting a post and a crossbar.

Argyle's Mats Wolthuis opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a shot that Hirschi goalie Luis Garcia couldn't corral from 20 yards out.

The Eagles struck the post and the crossbar in ensuing attacks, but Ian Sadler wasn't to be denied in the 22nd minute.

Sadler scored his team-leading 28th goal with one touch after a precise combination of passes down the field, the last of which came from Cole Hedlund.

Chad Hedlund's header into the back of the net with 10 minutes before halftime also was the result of a nice cross from Nick Mckellar off a set piece.

"Our passing was pretty crisp tonight," Argyle coach Mark Koke said. "That's the way we want it to look out there."

Wolthuis registered his second goal of the game in the 49th minute after two Huskies failed to clear Sadler's cross.

Chad Hedlund finished the scoring with 27:11 to play by converting a penalty kick. Mckellar was the Eagle brought down in the box.

Hirschi generated a quality scoring chance in each half. Richie Herrera touched the ball wide on Alajandro Campos' free kick when the score was 1-0 in the first half.

And Argyle keeper Jay Darby made a diving save to his right to deny Jimmy Dubon's strike in the second half.

Before the season, Koke said the Eagles set goals of making the playoffs and winning a postseason game.

Now Argyle has two playoff victories under its belt, it isn't ready for the ride to end yet.

"After our success in district, we reassessed our goals," Koke said. "Let's not be happy with one win. Let's take this thing as far as we can go and make a run at it."
