Swimming: Broncos second at district meet

Denton's DJ Lang grabbed swimmer of the meet honors as he and teammates Anthony Milbitz and Cody Knapp led the Broncos to a second-place overall finish in the District 6-4A swimming and diving meet last weekend.

Trophy Club Byron Nelson took first place in both the boys and girls divisions while Denton finished a close second in the boys division and Ryan was third in the girls division.

Denton school district swim coach Chris Cullen and Byron Nelson's Steve Melbourn shared coach of the year honors.

Lang won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.79, edging Ryan's Aaron Lawrence at 51.36. Lang teamed with Knapp, Milbitz and Kevin Ye to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.20. Lang teamed with Hunter Klein, Andy Ye and Kevin Ye to take second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Milbitz, Knapp, Klein and Andy Ye won the 200 medley relay. Milbitz then won the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.24, just ahead of Klein (1:00.43) and Kevin Ye (1:01.48) as Denton swept the top three spots. Knapp was the winner in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.49.

On the girls side, Denton's Rachel Crews won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.99.

Ryan's Kathryn Ray brought home two first-place finishes, winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.46 and grabbing gold in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.42.

Ryan's Mikey Winfrey was named the meet's top diver after dominating the 1-meter event with a total score of 307.60. Ryan's Olivia Thomas was second in the girls 1-meter diving with a score of 214.75.

Ryan's Aaron Lawrence won the 200 individual medley. He finished with a time of 2:07.34.

Next up for Denton and Ryan will be the regional swim meet Feb. 9-10 in Keller.
