POTTSBORO – The 2011-2012 athletic year has already been very successful for the Argyle Eagles and the boys golf team has added to that success by qualifying for the Class 3A state tournament after finishing second Tuesday in the regional golf tournament played at Tanglewood Golf Club.
Argyle played for the Class 3A state championship in football, losing to Wimberley, 21-14. The Argyle boys basketball team then claimed the 3A state title with a 44-33 victory over Corpus Christi Miller in the finals.
The Eagles, the 9-3A district title holder, shot a two-round total of 619 to take second and earn their first-ever berth in the state tournament, which will be played on May 3-4 at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. Prosper, the defending Class 3A state champion, won the regional title with two-day total of 590. Longview Spring Hill finished third at 641. The Argyle junior varsity squad, who finished second in district, finished 11 in the regionals with a 689 two-day total.
Argyle posted a season-best 305 on the first day of action and trailed Prosper by 15 strokes and led Spring Hill by 18 heading into the second round. Argyle saw its lead over Spring Hill dwindle during the early portion of the second round before the Eagles rallied to finish 21-strokes ahead of Spring Hill.
Colton Katzen paced the Eagles with a two-day total of 73-77 – 150, good enough for sixth overall. Nick Louy finished in a tie for 15th with a 75-81—156 total. Blake Lyle (78-79) and Lance Roden (80-77) tied for 17th with 157. Hunter Thompson finished with a 79-81 – 160 total.
Jack Graham paced the junior varsity squad with a 83-86 – 169. Landan Gumber (84-89) and Dylan Gumbert (90-83) finished at 173 while John Davis was at 89-85 – 174 and Grayson Stinson was at 92-94 – 186.
