High school football: Ponder continues search for new football coach

PONDER — The search for Ponder’s next head football coach could be over within a week, athletic director Jude Stanley said Tuesday.

The new head coach will replace Rubin Covington, who has accepted the offensive coordinator position at Mansfield Lake Ridge, which will open in June 2012.

“We’re looking for someone that obviously knows the game of football, but more importantly, we want somebody that has good core strengths and values for our kids, just like what we had with coach Covington,” Stanley said.

Stanley said there are eight finalists for the vacancy. Covington has coached the football program in its first two years at the varsity level, going 7-13 in that stretch.

Covington said the decision to leave Ponder came down to a family situation. His wife, Katrina, is a teacher at Saginaw Boswell and was unable to find an opening at or near Ponder.

As a result, Covington spent a lot of time away from his home and his 6-year-old and 9-year-old children.

Covington said there was nothing negative that led him to leave. Stanley said Covington will finish the year at Ponder.

The former Lions head coach will once again work with Kirk Thor, Lake Ridge’s head football coach. Covington worked under Thor while the two coached at Mansfield.

Covington will not only be reunited with Thor, but he will also be able to spend more time with his family.

“When things pop up or a kid gets sick at school, it’s not an option for me to go get them,” Covington said. “I’ve missed out on a lot of family time and a lot of growing time with my two little ones. I just couldn’t as a dad do that any longer to them.”
