AUSTIN — The Argyle boys find themselves in a usual but undesired position heading into the second round of the Class 3A golf tournament.
Three weeks ago, Argyle was in a similar position, trailing Prosper by 15 strokes heading into the final round of the regional tournament at Tanglewood Golf Resort in Pottsboro. Prosper again leads Argyle, but by only six strokes heading into today’s final round.
Prosper, the defending Class 3A state champion, shot an opening round 303 on Thursday on the par-72, 6,883-yard Jimmy Clay Golf Course. Argyle is at 309. Fredericksburg is in third with a 311 total, while Andrews is fourth at 316 in the eight-team field. Big Spring is fifth at 325, followed by Gatesville (326), Lampasas (329) and China Spring (337).
Leading the charge for Argyle on the first day was junior Blake Lyle, who fired a 3-over 75 and trails tournament co-leaders Marcus Bennett of Madisonville and Kraig Zimmerhanzel of Henderson by four shots.
One stroke behind Lyle is sophomore teammate Colton Katzen at 76. Nick Louy, also a sophomore, and freshman Lance Roden finished with 79s while junior Hunter Thompson shot an 83.
In the Class 3A girls tournament, also being played at Jimmy Clay, Sanger’s Kynze Mann shot an opening-round 84 and is eight strokes off the lead held by Andrews’ Sarah Black, who shot a 76. Courtynd Miller of Carthage is in second with a 77.
