Pilot Point’s softball program had a banner year in 2012, as James Ramsey’s squad won District 9-3A, losing just one district game, and made it to the Class 3A Region II semifinals, beating top-ranked Lucas Lovejoy along the way.
A lot of the Lady Cats’ success can be attributed to the play of junior Skylar Cagle, who was recognized as 9-3A’s most valuable player with the release of the all-district team.
Sanger, which finished second behind Pilot Point, also landed a superlative award as junior Nicole Nordie was named the district’s top offensive player, while defensive player of the year honors went to Argyle’s Blair O’Brien. Sanger’s Jae McMinn and Aubrey’s Shon Ranton, whose team finished third in the standings, were named co-coaches of the year.
In District 4-4A, Wichita Falls Rider ended Ryan’s run atop the district by claiming the championship while Ryan finished second.
The Denton area still had its share of district superlatives as Ryan’s Kayla Cunningham earned utility player of the year honors and Denton’s Kat Specht shared co-offensive player of the year honors with The Colony’s Tori Hawk.
Lake Dallas had a strong season, and freshman Amadi Taylor was recognized for it by earning newcomer of the year honors.
In District 7-5A, Guyer managed to take third place in a district that included state powerhouse Keller and upstart Keller Central. The Lady Wildcats fell in two tight games to highly ranked Plano, which finished second in a loaded District 8-5A.
Guyer landed two players on the all-district first team in juniors Suzette Palmer and Kennedy Been, who was the team’s leading hitter. Palmer followed up her successful sophomore campaign in the circle as the team’s top pitcher and one of its top hitters.
In District 9-2A, Ponder had a playoff season led by its three top hitters, who were all named first-team all-district. The Lady Lions were led at the plate by senior Madison McElroy and sophomores Andie Beer and Jessica Orozco, who were joined on the first team by teammate Carley Moore.
Krum’s Julia Schmaltz earned first-team honors as did her teammate Cheyanne Bullock.
