The Guyer boys cross country team finished first and Devin Norton finished fourth in the girls race at the Class 4A Region I meet Saturday in Lubbock.
The results mean the Wildcats will go to the state meet, with Norton going as an individual on the girls side, next Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
The Guyer boys were led by Colby Kuehler’s fourth-place finish in 15:44.22, followed by Tony Perez, Blake Fowler, Ben Sterenburg, Leighton Baker, Manuel Rivera III and Alex Williams.
The Wildcats beat El Paso Austin by 18 points and third-place El Paso Del Valle by 27 points. The top three teams and top 10 individuals advance to the state meet.
Lake Dallas also will be represented at the state meet as Brad James finished sixth in a time of 15:57.42.
The Guyer girls missed out on going to the state meet by one place, finishing fourth. But Norton will compete as an individual after finishing in 18:17.15. She was followed by teammates Peyton Bucklew, Gairy Natividad, Dria Windle, Brianne Van Voorhis, Megan Mac Isaac and Danielle Poyser.
Head coach Jonathan Ponsonby, who is in his second year atop Guyer’s program, said he knew in June, when the team began practicing, that the Wildcats had the talent to get in position to bring home a state title.
“Our motto has been, ‘Right now, somewhere else, someone is working harder than you, and when you meet them, they will win,’” Ponsonby said. “Today, we were that team.”
