Basketball roundup: Nelson storms past Denton in second half

TROPHY CLUB — For two quarters Tuesday night, the Denton Broncos had the Trophy Club Byron Nelson Bobcats right where they wanted them, and then halftime came. The Bobcats turned up the defensive and offensive pressure in the second half and stormed to a 67-51 victory.

Denton, needing a victory to take second place in District 5-4A, led 36-33 at halftime but was then outscored 34-15 in the final 16 minutes.

The victory give Byron Nelson (26-5, 12-2) second place behind the Guyer Wildcats in the 5-4A standings while the Broncos (15-15, 11-3) finish third heading into the Class 4A state playoffs next week.

Michael Jackson led the scoring for Denton with 19 while Manny Patterson finished with 16.

 

Hebron 58, Ryan 36

Ryan finished the regular season with a 58-36 loss to Hebron on Tuesday night, despite 13 points from Montarius Banks.

Nick Jones had 10 points for the Raiders (13-16, 0-10 District 5-5A).

 

Gainesville 62, Sanger 49

SANGER — Despite a 15-point effort by Bennan Bloom, Sanger fell to Gainesville in the District 9-3A finale for both teams.

Tanner Thomas scored 10 points for the Indians (15-16, 4-4 district) and Wylding Smith added six.

Sanger will play Carrollton Ranchview in the first round of the playoffs at a time and place to be determined.

 

Lake Dallas 52, Azle 46

CORINTH — Josh Jackson scored 13 points to lead Lake Dallas past Azle to end the regular season.

Lorren Bassett had 12 points to lead Lake Dallas (11-23, 3-11 District 5-4A), while Kaleb Wright added eight.

 

Argyle 50, Carrollton Ranchview 44

ARGYLE — Zach Dickerson scored 18 points to lead Argyle to a victory over Carrollton Ranchview and finish undefeated in District 10-3A play at 8-0.

Spencer McCloud had 11 points to lead Argyle (23-9).

 

Ponder 73, Boyd 35

PONDER — Clay Morgan scored 25 points to lead Ponder past Boyd.

The Lions (27-8) ended the season at 11-1 in District 9-2A.

Kade Copp had 12 points for Ponder (27-8) and Jon Sidler added 11.

Ponder will play Abilene Wylie in a playoff warm-up game at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Wilkerson-Greines Arena in Fort Worth.

Liberty Christian 76, Addison Trinity 46

ARGYLE — Sydney Goodson scored 18 points to lead Liberty Christian past Addison Trinity Christian, putting the Lady Warriors at 9-3 in Division 1 TAPPS 5A.

Rayvon Christian was also in double-digits for Liberty (20-14) with 16 points, while Rebekah Hand added 11.
